It seems like every five minutes the beauty industry has a new trend to hop on. And the latest trend du jour, copper peptides, is one you’ll want to pay attention to.

It’s much like when colloidal silver and 24k gold hit the scene. But with a word like copper in it, it helps to understand more.

Copper Peptides Explained

Believe it or not, copper peptides have been explored in skincare for quite some time. Only now are they starting to generate tons of interest.

Why the sudden excitement? People are now catching on to how this ingredient can boost skin firmness, smoothness, and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Copper peptides stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, plus they improve antioxidant activity. Also known as GHK-Cu, copper peptides occur naturally in the body, but that reduces with age.

Therefore, using copper peptides in your skincare routine as you make more trips around the sun is probably a good idea if you don’t want to look your age.

Why Use Copper Peptides?

There are gobs of benefits you’ll get if you nab a copper peptide-infused serum:

  • Tightens sagging skin
  • Reverses skin thinning
  • Repairs skin’s protective barrier
  • Improves firmness, elasticity, and clarity
  • Reduces the depth of wrinkles
  • Strengthens skin structure
  • Smooths out roughness
  • Reduces photodamage and hyperpigmentation
  • Makes skin look better overall
  • Speeds up wound healing
  • Protects skin cells from UV damage
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Prevents free radical damage

What to Know Before You Use Copper Peptides

Copper peptides can be a great way to retexturize your skin and make it look more youthful. It’s also helpful if you have hyperpigmentation.

You’ll generally find it as a serum though it will work best when you add a layer of barrier-protecting moisturizer afterward to seal it in.

Copper peptides generally play well with other skincare ingredients except for vitamin C. Other than that, it’s a bit difficult to overuse them.

The greater danger would be ingesting them, and no one seems to be in a hurry to eat their skincare products. Copper peptides are gentler than retinoids though they could produce a rash, and for some that overuse them, you risk organ toxicity.

It’s best to try copper peptide serums on a small portion of your skin to see how it reacts. In most formulations, they are mixed with other ingredients so you’re not coming into contact with it in its isolated form, making it a safe option to work into your skincare routine for anti-aging.
