5 Natural Ways To Look Younger Than Your Age

There is no shame in wanting to look youthful and flawless. When we look good, we feel good - we feel wonderful and confident. We want to look radiant for decades. Sadly, we cannot keep that healthy glow in a bottle and apply it any time we want to look 10 or 20 years younger.

Many things can cause our skin to look older and drier, including sun damage, weight changes, unhealthy lifestyle choices, and of course, aging. As we grow older, our skin tends to lose its firmness and elasticity, eventually resulting in loose and sagging skin. However, while skin laxity and aging appear undeniably intertwined, another year added to your age should not necessarily equate to another line on your forehead.

There are many treatments and procedures for tightening skin, smoothing wrinkles, and treating crow’s feet. But before you schedule a Botox appointment at the first sight of fine lines, let’s take a look at some healthy and natural ways to look younger without Botox injections and cosmetic fillers.

Get Sufficient Sleep

As tempting as it is to stay up all night and binge on your favorite show, it’s important to get at least eight hours of quality sleep to prevent dark circles from forming under your eyes. Often accompanied by puffy eye bags, these dark circles do not only make you look older, but they are also difficult to get rid of.

It is also ideal to catch some z's between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. which are the best hours for regenerative sleep. During this period, collagen and melatonin production are at their highest, and cell metabolism and skin regeneration peak. Getting enough sleep at the right time every night can keep those dark circles and puffy eyes at bay.

Use a Humidifier

Exposure to the bitter cold of winter outdoors - or even the drying effect of air conditioning and heating indoors - decreases your skin’s elasticity which, in the long run, leads to the development of fine lines and wrinkles. A dry environment with low humidity can extract moisture from your skin, leaving it dry and flaky. Fortunately, while you cannot control the weather, you can do something about the climate in your home by using a humidifier.

Run a humidifier to add moisture to the air while you get your beauty rest. A humidifier does not only help hydrate your skin and give it the moisture it needs, but it can also help improve other conditions, such as allergies, cracked lips, irritated eyes, itchy skin, limp hair, and sinus headaches.

Drink More Water

Staying hydrated is one of the most valuable beauty tips to prevent aging and maintain a healthy glow. Drink at least six to eight glasses of water every day to maintain skin elasticity, flush out toxins, and reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging. Staying hydrated can give you a clear and dewy complexion and not have you looking like a shriveled raisin.

Remember, however, that while all beverages may count toward your daily water intake, certain drinks do come with drawbacks. While juices, smoothies, sodas, and even sports drinks can be hydrating, they can also be high in sugar and calories. Coffee and tea provide water, but they are also diuretics and can make you lose more water when you pee.

It might be best to just stick with water, but if you don’t like water because it’s tasteless, you can add some sliced limes, cucumbers, or other fresh fruits for some natural flavor.

Load Up on Antioxidants

Antioxidants are chemicals and nutrients that protect your skin against inflammation and free radicals. They can slow down premature aging caused by external factors such as sun exposure, pollution, drinking, and smoking. They can also help reverse the visible signs of aging and aid in skin repair, giving your skin a brighter tone and youthful glow.

Though your body makes antioxidants naturally, you can also enjoy a lot of healthy and delicious foods that are high in antioxidants. You can include these on your next trip to the grocery: artichokes, broccoli, cabbage, dark chocolate, lemons, oranges, pecans, plums, and various kinds of berries.

Use Sunscreen and Supplements

Sun exposure is one of the leading causes of damaged, wrinkled, and spotted skin. Avoid the harmful effects of the sun by always wearing sunscreen and protective clothing like lightweight long-sleeved shirts and wide-brimmed hats.

Using sunscreen daily does not only prevent and reduce the signs of aging, but it also protects you from sunburn and limits the appearance of liver spots - flat discolored areas on the skin that are common in adults aged 50 and older.

If you’ve put off wearing sunscreen because you find it heavy and oily and felt it blocked your pores, there are lighter sunscreens suitable for every skin type. But if you are suffering the consequences of overexposure to the sun and you need help reviving sun-damaged skin, creams and lotions with retinol can treat anti-aging concerns and smoothen those wrinkles.

Final Word: Start Early with Healthy Habits

The fountain of youth may remain a myth, but if you want to look and feel young well into your middle age and beyond, it’s a good idea to start early. Make healthy lifestyle changes, sleep and eat well, hydrate, and use natural skin treatments to maintain a healthy body and stay looking young and radiant.
