Skincare Tips To Spare Dry Hands

With colder weather setting in, it’s easier than ever for your hands to feel dry. Dry skin can happen any time of year, but it seems most people are plagued by it on the hands during fall and winter. As that humidity drops, the dry air can bring out the worst in skin, making creases more noticeable and causing cracking and bleeding too.

Fortunately, the American Academy of Dermatology says it’s an easy fix. If you make a few changes to your routine and incorporate some new habits, you’ll have soft, supple hands that will stay comfortable no matter how low the temperatures go!

Use Lukewarm Water

Tempting as it is to come in from the blustering snow and cold to a hot shower, that will only make matters worse. When the water is too hot, this will draw all the natural moisture out of your body, including your hands. Go with lukewarm water, especially when washing your hands.

Try A Cream Or Ointment

Lotions are great for spring and summer, but they’re too thin for fall and winter. You need a rich cream or even an ointment that can help seal in the moisture to your skin. Right after bathing or washing your hands, apply it immediately after patting your skin dry for the best effect. Look for ultra-hydrating ingredients like jojoba oil, olive oil, shea butter, hyaluronic acid, and glycerin.

Keep Moisturizers Handy

Pardon the pun, but you’ll be more likely to keep your hands from getting dry and cracked if you keep your moisturizers on hand. Put a tube of it by the sink so you always remember to slather it on after handwashing. And be sure to stash a travel-size version in your bag so you have it with you wherever you go.

Avoid Scented Skincare Products

Many skincare products with fragrances added in can result in exactly the opposite of what you want to see with the skin on your hands. It’s best to stick with unscented products or those made for sensitive skin to avoid any harsh additives that could undo your best efforts.

Wear Gloves

After all that effort to keep your hands moisturized, don’t forget to take your gloves along when the weather is cold. Exposure to extreme temperatures and whipping winds will result in dry, chapped skin.

Use A Humidifier

When there’s little moisture in the air, your body loses that essential hydration that keeps skin hydrated and supple. It might feel great to sit around a roaring fire or be tucked indoors where the heater is humming away, but those things dry out your skin, especially on your hands. By using a humidifier in conjunction with them, you’ll add moisture back to the air and avoid having dry skin.

Keep these tips on-hand for your softest hands, even on the coldest days!
