How To Combat Crepey Skin

Remember crepe paper in arts and crafts? As it turns out, your skin can take on a similar appearance with age. Crepey skin is defined as skin that sags and has fine wrinkles much like the crafting paper we remember from our childhood art projects. While fine for making art, it’s not the appearance you want your skin to take on.

In order to fight crepey skin, you should know what causes it. The biggest cause is damage from the sun, though if you’re slacking on drinking enough water or applying enough moisturizer to your skin externally, you might wind up with crepey skin. Losing lots of weight and other lifestyle factors like smoking can also increase your chances for having crepey skin.

All these factors together along with the natural course of aging can lead to skin damage from the sun plus less collagen and elastin production. You’ll of course want to stop this before it becomes official but how?

Prevention Techniques For Crepey Skin

If you’re still young and have reasonably bouncy and healthy-looking skin, you can prevent crepey skin from happening. Here are some tips!

  • Try to avoid prolonged periods in the sun
  • When you do go out in the sun, wear sunscreen and protect yourself through clothing
  • Use good moisturizing lotion on every part of your body, particularly with hyaluronic acid or glycerin
  • For deep moisturization, go with rich ingredients like cocoa butter, coconut oil, and olive oil
  • Always eat a nutritional diet full of healthy fruits and vegetables

How To Treat Your Crepey Skin

It’s never too late to take on preventative measures for crepey skin, however, if your skin already has that crepe paper look to it, you’ll have to be even more aggressive. You can go with dermatological treatments like topical retinoids.

This is likely the first approach your dermatologist will suggest. Retinoids are ideal for speeding up cell turnover. Since they can tax skin with more dryness though, you’ll also need to counter it with a hydrating moisturizer.

You can also choose fractional laser treatments that help your skin to make new collagen, working from the inside out. Ultrasound treatments may also tighten skin below the tissues to help boost its appearance. Some choose CoolSculpting when there’s loose skin atop excess fat while others choose fillers that can correct the texture and thickness.

Even over-the-counter treatments exist in the form of glycolic acid, lactic acid, and hyaluronic acid. If your skin is only slightly crepey, these may be the place to start. Ultimately though, if you’re unhappy with crepey skin or you want to be sure to avoid it, you should consult your dermatologist and use a combination of these prevention and treatment techniques for your best results.
