Reasons Why You Should Save Your Teeth

Have you ever had a toothache at some point in your life? If you’ve experienced it, then you know how agonizing it can get.

Few things are as painful as a toothache. We may follow the best oral health routines, but it’s still possible for us to suffer one. It could be caused by an injury or worse, an infection.  And once an infected tooth becomes abscessed, we, more often than not, think of nothing more than extracting it just to rid ourselves of the pain, which can radiate to the jawbone, neck, or ear.

The thing is, we really shouldn’t make such a decision unless it’s absolutely necessary, like when your aching tooth already poses a danger to your overall health. If anything, a tooth extraction should only be a last resort. You should always exhaust all the means available to relieve the pain and save your natural tooth.

Here are some reasons why you must do what you can to save your natural teeth.

You Can Keep Your Natural Smile

Not all people have a lovely, natural smile. If you possess one, know that a tooth extraction will easily ruin that. It doesn’t even have to be any of the front teeth. Once you have a tooth extracted, the structure of your other teeth will be affected, and so will your smile. Even if you get dentures, veneers, or bridges, they won’t be able to approximate the comfort and look of natural teeth.

Natural Teeth Are Stronger

The shiny, white enamel that covers our teeth is the hardest substance in the body. It is even stronger than any of our bones. Because of the strength of enamel, our teeth can last for a long time, even hundreds of years.

When you decide to have an aching but otherwise fine tooth pulled out, you will be wasting one of the strongest and most durable parts of your body, and compromising your ability to chew food normally as well.

Fewer Dietary Restrictions

People who have dentures or dental implants typically have to follow strict dietary restrictions. They have to avoid, for example, eating harder-than-usual food. They have to give up their love of certain meats, fruits, and vegetables if they don’t want to risk their artificial teeth breaking once they bite down.

If you save your aching natural teeth through a root canal procedure, you can still exert your normal biting force and not be afraid of breaking anything inside your mouth. As mentioned above, natural teeth are so much stronger because of the enamel. That means you can still eat just about anything. You can keep on living a natural and normal lifestyle by keeping your natural teeth.

Saving Your Teeth Is Less Painful

Sure, root canal treatment - the best option available to save your teeth - does cause a bit of discomfort. Still, a root canal is still a lot less painful than a tooth extraction. Most people think root canal or endodontic treatment, but getting the procedure done is no more painful than getting fillings for a tooth.

Tooth extraction, on the other hand, involves bleeding, swelling, and a fair amount of pain. There’s also the risk of infection, mainly because you have an open wound right inside your mouth.

It’s More Affordable Too

A standard root canal to save your teeth is way cheaper than getting artificial replacements. These days, it’s still possible to get a root canal and spend only somewhere between $900 and $1,100. Dentures, on the other hand, can cost up to $8,000. And if you’re thinking about getting a dental implant, know that it’s going to cost you as much as $6,000 per tooth.

In many cases, a tooth extraction may be necessary and the only option left. Perhaps the aching tooth is already irreparably damaged due to severe decay. If it’s an impacted tooth, an extraction may be the only way to prevent it from causing damage to other teeth. Removal may also be needed to avoid overcrowding. But if your dental situation isn’t that dire, go only for options that will relieve you of the pain and will allow you to keep your natural teeth.
