If you snore while sleeping, you're not alone. In fact, it is very common for adult men and women to snore occasionally. However, while your sleeping may be harmless and not impacting your health in any way, there can be situations where your snoring is being caused by another health issue.
When this is the case, it is often a good idea to visit your doctor to get more information and treatment if necessary. To learn more about what may be behind your snoring, here are some common health issues connected with this habit.
If you are an allergy sufferer, you have a greater chance of also being a snorer. When you have chronic nasal congestion, this results in your airway collapsing due to the reduced flow of air. As the issue persists over time, the result is the development of habitual snoring. When seeking treatment, doctors often recommend nasal decongestants or steroids.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea
A breathing disorder often going undiagnosed, obstructive sleep apnea is characterized by numerous pauses in breathing while a person is sleeping. Linked to depression, heart disease, high blood pressure, and falling asleep while behind the wheel of a vehicle, it is a serious condition that should be addressed as quickly as possible.
Once a diagnosis has been made, your doctor may suggest various types of CPAP machines be used during sleep to help with your condition.
If you are severely overweight, your obesity could be contributing to your snoring. When you are carrying extra pounds on your body, the excess tissue in your neck area leads to a narrowing airway, making you more susceptible to airway collapses and increased snoring. In fact, losing as little as 10 pounds can greatly reduce or even eliminate your snoring.
If your thyroid gland does not work as strongly as it should, you are suffering from hypothyroidism. Marked by such characteristics as a puffy face and hoarse voice, it is also a contributing factor to snoring. Fortunately, it is a condition that can be treated through the use of medication.
If you believe your snoring could be linked to these or other health issues, always make an appointment with your doctor to discuss what may be occurring. By talking in-depth to your doctor and allowing them to conduct various tests, you can get to the primary cause of your snoring and receive the treatment you need to improve your health.
