Common Causes For That Chicken Skin Under Your Eyes And How to Make It Go Away

Every phase of your life will bring you challenges with your skin. These things range from breakouts to dryness to the signs of aging. But one thing you may experience in your lifetime is something dubbed “chicken skin.” It appears under the eye area and has this unusual moniker due to its resemblance of recently-plucked chicken skin.

The bumps are not dangerous, usually from buildup in the pores. But they can make you feel self-conscious about your appearance. Knowing more about what causes chicken skin under the eyes can help you find a resolution to your skin troubles.

Why Do I Have Chicken Skin Under My Eyes?

As mentioned, there’s usually no danger to having chicken skin. It can be caused by an allergic reaction, which if that’s the case, can clear up on its own without any assistance. If you suspect your chicken skin might be allergy-related, you should figure out if you’ve come into contact with an allergen. It’s not uncommon to develop new allergies as you age, so you may need to eliminate some common allergens to see if it makes a difference.

Chicken skin can also be caused by milia which are small, white bumps that come from excess keratin buildup in the pores. When it clogs your pores, these bumps can arise. Keratosis pilaris is yet another cause for chicken skin. It can be very irritating, caused by dead skin cell buildup. Sometimes these bumps will be red or brown.

How Can I Get Rid of Chicken Skin Under My Eyes?

Sometimes, even with your best efforts, you may still get dead skin cells or keratin buildup in your pores that can cause this chicken skin appearance. At home, you can try moisturizing with lotions and ointments to give skin what it needs. Warm baths are helpful for loosening up pores. You’ll do even more good with a loofah to help remove dead skin cells.

Add moisture back into skin with a humidifier as you sleep. You can also use rose water. It’s very anti-inflammatory, plus it smells great. Another option is to use an OTC cream that removes dead skin cells and speeds up the turnover process to clear blocked follicles. Retinol is quite effective at helping skin with rejuvenating. You can also seek out in-office skin treatments such as microdermabrasion or chemical peels.

If you don’t have chicken skin though, that’s the best news of all. To prevent it, you should clean and exfoliate often. This keeps your cell turnover going at the right pace which will prevent the buildup that causes chicken skin in the first place. And if you already use retinol or vitamin E products at night, you’re certainly well on your way to keeping your skin from looking like a plucked chicken.

For those with bumps, resist the urge to pick or poke at them. It can lead to an infection and make them even worse. If these bumps cause you pain or ooze, you should make sure you see your doctor for an effective treatment as soon as possible to get it under control.
