Thinking about getting a chemical peel? Perhaps someone you know has enthused about them. But are they painful? What’s involved? And what can you expect?

Chemical peels are a skin resurfacing procedure where a chemical solution is used to remove the top layers of skin. When skin grows back afterward, it leaves it smoother and more youthful. If you have concerns about wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, or scars, a chemical peel may be a good option for you.

Types Of Chemical Peels

You likely know that chemical peels exist, but did you know they are done at different depths? There are three types of chemical peels:

- Light

Also called a superficial chemical peel, it only removes the outer layer of skin. Ideal for fine wrinkles, uneven skin tone, dryness, and acne, this may suit you best. You can indulge in the process every two to five weeks as needed.

- Medium

Go a bit deeper with medium chemical peels. These not only remove skin cells from the epidermis but also from the upper part of your dermis, that middle layer of skin.

You get deeper wrinkle treatment and uneven skin tone correction as well as the reduction of acne scars. You should do these less frequently, about every three to nine months.

- Deep

As the name implies, this type of chemical peel goes all the way to the lower layers of your dermis. Deep chemical peels are mostly ideal if you have very deep wrinkles, scars, or any precancerous growths. Because of the depths, this can only be done once, and it is usually used as a last resort.

What Happens During A Chemical Peel?

In general, your aesthetician will apply a chemical solution to your skin with cotton or gauze. For light peels, it’s usually glycolic acid or salicylic acid.

For medium peels, it tends to contain trichloroacetic acid. It may sting slightly during this time.

In light peels, a neutralizing solution will be applied while in medium peels, you will be given a cool compress instead.

After that, you will have some redness and irritation for several days to a week later. Light peels heal faster while medium ones are a bit more painful.

You can take OTC pain relievers and use cool compresses to soothe your skin until it fully heals. It’s best to stay out of the sun too after any type of chemical peel.

What Will My Skin Look Like After A Chemical Peel?

Once your skin heals from a light chemical peel, you should notice improved texture and tone. Any fine wrinkles you had should also have faded away.

Since light peels don’t go as deep, you will want to repeat this process intermittently to achieve your best results.

With a medium peel, your skin will look so much smoother right away. However, if you like to go in the sun, you should know that you probably shouldn’t do so for several months.

You might rather prefer the light peel instead, or to have the procedure done in winter when you won’t be tempted to head to the beach or pool.

Do remember that results of chemical peels might not last. New damage from the sun, laughing, and smiling can bring wrinkles back so be prepared to invest in this process.
