5 Most Common Skincare Problems And How To Treat Them

Most people will experience one skincare problem or another during their lifetime. No matter what social media will have you believe, perfect skin is not a reality – at least not 100 percent of the time.

Luckily, most of the common skin issues are highly treatable. All it takes is finding the right product and identifying your triggers. Let’s take a look at five of them and what you can do to combat them.

1. Acne and Spots

Spots are a very common skincare problem, and adult acne affects about 20 percent of the population. They can be caused by a whole range of culprits:

  • The bacteria P.acnes that will cause inflammation and redness
  • Excessive oil production
  • Dead skin cells that clog up pores

Where you get most of your spots can also tell you what has caused them. For example, chin breakouts are most often hormonal and the result of PMS or even pregnancy.

To combat a severe case of acne, your best bet is to consult a dermatologist. They’ll be able to prescribe the right kind of product. Retinoids and salicylic acid can help – but again, consult an expert to get the best possible advice.

2. Enlarged Pores

The size of your pores partly depends on your genetics, so you may never be able to get rid of them completely. However, you can minimize them with the use of the right products.

Mandelic and salicylic acid work well, as do retinoids. It’s important to exfoliate your skin regularly to get rid of dead skin cells that clog your pores and cause blackheads. Don’t exfoliate too often, though, as that will have the opposite effect. Once or twice a week is all you need. Using peel-off masks with clay, steaming your face regularly, and applying pore strips are also good ways to combat blackheads.

3. Dehydrated Skin

To keep your skin plump, you need to drink plenty of water, first and foremost. No matter how good the moisturizers you use are, if you are dehydrated on the inside, you won’t see the results you’re looking for.

Another important point to bear in mind is that oily skin can be dehydrated, too. That’s especially likely if you use a lot of stripping products in an effort to reduce oil production.

Hyaluronic acid and ceramides are your friends here. Find a daily and nightly moisturizer that works for your skin type, and use it religiously. Something heavier for the winter and a light gel-cream for the summer usually works really well. A once-a-week hydrating mask can also be a great way to not only hydrate your skin but also to practice some self-care.

4. Dark Circles and Puffy Eyes

Unfortunately, dark circles can also be hereditary, so you may be somewhat stuck with them. What you can do, however, is treat the puffiness and minimize their appearance.

Undereye patches that you keep in the fridge will do wonders for your puffy eyes in the morning. Plus, they’ll rehydrate your skin as well. Using a massage roller on your undereyes very gently can also help drain them and make you look fresher.

Use an undereye cream every morning and evening as well. If you’re applying makeup, make sure you use a product that doesn’t break down your concealer and that serves as a good primer. Caffeine is a great ingredient to look for, and if you’re starting to see some wrinkles, anti-aging eye creams should be on your radar too. Collagen is your friend here.

5. Dark Spots and Acne Scars

If you’ve been spending too much time in the sun or have suffered from spot breakouts in the past, you might now be left with some scars you want to get rid of. Maskne also tends to leave scarring, sadly, and we’ve all been dealing with it to a certain extent in the past year.

The ingredients to look for are vitamin C, niacinamide, retinoids, azelaic acid, and alpha-hydroxy acids. Be careful when using them, and monitor your skin’s reaction, so as not to cause dry or flaky skin.

Also make sure you are wearing an SPF every day, even when it’s cloudy. That’s especially important when using the above ingredients, as the combination can cause added scarring and spots.

Final Thoughts

Modern skincare is slowly but surely finding a solution for the most common skin issues. All you have to do is test out different combinations of ingredients until you find one that works for you. Always choose products for your skin type. Most importantly, always remember that what you eat, how much you drink, how much you sleep, and how you feel also plays a huge role in what your skin will look like.
