What Can Epsom Salt Do For You?

From the town of Epsom in England, Epsom salt has been used since at least the 17th century for a variety of remedies. Chemically, it’s called magnesium sulfate, made from magnesium, sulfur, and oxygen.

While you can use it orally, it isn’t the same as table salt. In fact, because it has laxative effects, you’d be wise to keep it out of your food unless you need to get things moving. Besides, Epsom salt doesn’t exactly add the kind of flavor we use table salt for since it’s so bitter.

The main benefits of Epsom salt are largely due to magnesium. Getting a carton of it can be useful for so many things. Here are a handful of suggestions of what you can do with Epsom salt.

Sleep better and reduce stress

Had a long, terrible day at work? Come home and soak in a tub of Epsom salt with water. The magnesium content is believed to help balance out your brain’s neurotransmitters to help bring on sleep and leave stress behind. Your body absorbs the magnesium through your skin and balances out. Plus, nothing feels like a nice, hot soak in a bath!

Relieve constipation

Feel like you have to go but aren’t really going anywhere? Constipation can be incredibly painful, but if you use Epsom salt, you’ll encourage bowel movements much thanks to that magnesium.

Treat your feet

Soaking tired feet in water with Epsom salt will help them recover after a day of walking. But if you have athlete’s foot or toe fungus, it can help get rid of it too.

Recovery after exercise

If you can’t make it to your masseuse after a major training session or athletic performance, you can use a bath of Epsom salt to relieve sore muscles. Those training for special events may want to incorporate an oral supplement though taking Epsom salt for that will result in the loosening of bowels.

Reduction of pain and swelling

You can also soak in a tub of Epsom salt to relieve any joint pain and swelling. Those suffering from arthritis and fibromyalgia find it to be a great relief.

Buff skin to beauty

Another way to make use of your Epsom salt is to use it as a scrub for your skin. It will gently buff away dead skin cells, especially if you apply it to a loofah or sponge along with a little cleansing oil. Your skin will be smooth, soft, and fantastically hydrated.

You can even use Epsom salt to clean things around your home like cleaning your grout, washing your pots and pans, and even helping clear out the gunk in your washing machine. Epsom salt is very versatile so keep some around for all of your needs!

Which one will you try adding into your creams for an anti-aging boost?
