Tips To Hydrate Your Skin This Winter

Dry skin can be an irritating problem in the wintertime. Excessively dry skin can actually crack and become painful. When temperatures drop and cold winds are waiting for you outdoors, you need to take extra steps to keep your skin hydrated and healthy

Drink More Water

Your skin may seem like it’s just a layer of tissue, but it’s actually an organ. In fact, it's the largest organ in your body. Just like all of your vital organs and systems, your skin needs continual hydration in order to maintain cellular integrity.

Be sure that you are drinking the recommended amount of water per day. It's easy to forget to drink during a busy workday. When you're exceptionally busy, the impulse to drink can slip right by you and you will be thirsty without being consciously aware of it.

When this happens, the appearance of your skin may reflect dehydration. It may appear slightly dull and even gray.

Start your day with at least one or two glasses of water. You'll be extra dehydrated when you wake up in the morning and haven't been drinking during the time that you were asleep.

Try to avoid replacing water in your liquid consumption with other beverages that may satisfy your taste but want to really quench your skin's thirst. In particular, make it a point to cut out super sugary beverages such as soda, sports drinks, and concentrated juices.

Drinking an excessive amount of sugary beverages could worsen inflammation and thereby exacerbate blemishes and other irritations that are noticeable on your face and back.

Protect Your Lips Against Cracking

When you head outside on a blustery day, one of the first places where you're really going to feel that chill is on your lips. The skin on your lips is among the most sensitive external skin on your body. It is a lot more sensitive to touch than fingertips, which are packed with sensory receptors. 

The moment that you feel your lips become dry, your natural impulse will probably be to rehydrate down by licking them. However, in a cold environment, dampening your lips with saliva will offer only a moment of relief.

As soon as the cold and abrasive air temperature causes that saliva to evaporate, your lips will become even more dry and uncomfortable. Repeating this act many times on a cold day is likely to cause that delicate skin to chap and eventually crack. 

You should use a hydrating product that nourishes your lips while also arming them with a barrier against the cold. Using a mango balm is an excellent option. If you should happen to lick your lips, you won't be making them more vulnerable to the elements, and you can enjoy having pleasantly flavorful mango lips.

Take Special Care of Your Hands

People’s hands are an area where wintertime skin problems are exceptionally common. While the skin on your fingertips is smooth and soft, a lot of the areas over and under your knuckles as well as your palms are kind of thick and sometimes rough.

Having two very differently textured types of skin in close proximity can make it challenging to care for the area effectively. Using a lotion or balm that’s specifically intended for use on your hands can help you tackle the area effectively. Also, always be sure to wear touchscreen gloves to spare your hands from unnecessary discomfort and cracking.

Hydrate With Oils

Moisturizing lotion alone may not be enough to hydrate or heal your skin during the wintertime. Using a lubricating oil can lock in moisture to your skin. And all natural oils such as almond oil or vitamin E oil are good options for soothing your skin while you moisturize it.

Cold weather can take a toll on your skin. Arm yourself against the elements and keep your skin looking healthy all winter long. Your skin will feel better, and your well-hydrated skin will look more even toned and vibrant.
