Let’s face it, your skin works pretty hard to keep the rest of your body safe. It’s your first line of defense when it comes to protection from unhealthy germs, pollution and other free radicals. Your skin also takes a beating, which means without appropriate care, it can start to look weathered far earlier than it should.
Thankfully, there are ways to reduce the ill-effects of stress, acne and just about everything your skin comes in contact with. Read on to learn four ways you can fall in love with the skin you’re in.
Products Matter
Your skin, especially your face, says a lot about you. When you live a healthy lifestyle and take care of your skin, it simply glows. However, as you get older, the products you used in your teens might not work as effectively now that you’re in your twenties, thirties, or even older.
Choose products that work best for your current skin type. If you tend to break out during the summer, look for products that stop oil production in its tracks. If cool autumn breezes leave your skin as dry as the desert, choose products that offer a moisturizing component.
Treat Yourself
Taking care of your skin at home is only one part of the equation. In addition to removing makeup at night and using sunscreen, you can schedule monthly appointments at a medical spa. Here, you can indulge yourself with exfoliating treatments, lasers, and microcurrents that will leave you glowing from head to foot.
You Are What You Eat
As much as you hate to admit it, your mom was right. What you eat plays an enormous role on how you look. Diets rich in fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 work from the inside out to keep your skin healthy. Alternately, carb-heavy diets can cause breakouts. You should also limit alcohol intake to keep your skin looking dewy. Overconsumption can lead to dull-looking skin as well as blotchiness.
Bottoms Up
One of the easiest ways to keep your skin looking younger is proper hydration. Make sure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day. If plain water isn’t your thing, you can spice things up by adding fresh or frozen fruit. You can even add cucumbers and mint to your H2O for a double dose of hydration. Water not only reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but it also keeps dark, under-eye circles from looking worse than they really are.
Finally, in addition to living a healthy, active lifestyle and using the products, your mental health is also important. If your life is filled with stress and anxiety, or if you suffer from depression, it will show up on your face. Mediation helps a lot when it comes to relieving psychological stressors, as does simply talking about your feelings with someone you trust.
