Pediatric Skin Conditions: What You Should Know

Skin conditions can start as a newborn and follow throughout life. Because a baby or small child has skin that is more sensitive than an adult they are at increased risk for contact dermatitis and other conditions that may present themselves differently based upon cause and age, but the treatments are often the same.

The most common skin conditions are warts, diaper dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and acne. These conditions may decrease or cease completely by the teenage or adult years, or they may continue into adulthood.

Diaper Dermatitis and pediatric skin conditions

The most common skin issue faced by new parents is diaper dermatitis, also known as diaper rash, and it has several causes or forms. Diaper rash will present itself as red patches in the area covered by the diaper.

These areas may become swollen and will be sore, and in some cases can form patches that appear to be blisters. Exposure to urine or feces in a diaper can cause the rash, and if not addressed quickly enough, infections can occur. Solutions include more frequent diaper changes and diaper creams that create a moisture barrier limiting contact with the skin.

Yeast Infection and pediatric skin conditions

Another common cause is a yeast infection, which grows quickly in the warm and often damp area in the diaper and creates red patches and bumps, and occasionally bumps that are filled with pus. Treatment for this is an antifungal cream, often from a prescription, and can be used in conjunction with a diaper cream that will also create a barrier against dampness and urine.

As both types of diaper rash can occur at the same time it is not uncommon to use both treatments at the same time. In the event of a contact reaction due to an allergy to the diaper or its components, treatment can be done with diaper rash creams, but to solve the issue it may be necessary to change to a different brand.

Cradle Cap and pediatric skin conditions

Cradle cap is often found on babies and toddlers, and can continue into the teen an adult years as dandruff. This is also known as seborrheic dermatitis and can be found in a few areas on the body such as skin folds or on the face and neck.

These also may require a topical cream treatment or need a prescription or steroid cream. Changing the bath routine, using a milk baby shampoo, and ensuring the head and hair are dried gently after each wash can also help reduce the occurrence of cradle cap.

Eczema and pediatric skin conditions

Eczema is often treated in the same way and can be treated at the same time. This will appear as a rash, sometimes flaky, and often occurs inside the elbows or knees. This form of atopic dermatitis can be improved by cool baths or showers and added moisturizer, but may require a change of soaps and cleaners, or a prescription antibiotic cream or oral antibiotic.

Warts and pediatric skin conditions

Childhood warts generally occur on the hands and feet, and are caused by a viral infection. Warts will appear as small bumps, but can’t be treated as the other skin conditions can. These should be treated by a pediatrician, where they may be removed by freezing and removing skin that has become infected.

Children can have many of the same skin conditions as adults, and some are treated in the same ways. If general diaper creams or changing lotions and soaps do not solve the concern, then it is important to consult a pediatrician.
