How To Prevent Or Reduce Oily Skin

Skin is the largest organ on the body, and due to its contact with the outside elements and pollutants in the air, it can be hard to take proper care of it as well as maintain its health and balance. Often skin becomes dry or oily and it becomes necessary to find a way to balance its needs to make it comfortable and healthy.

Oily skin is simply caused by the skin producing too much oil - or sebum - so that rather then a protective factor it becomes problematic and may result in acne from clogged pores. In some people this occurs due to genetics, but as with all things in the body, stress and hormones also play a part. Increased stress can cause increased oil, but as stress cannot always be removed there are several ways to help reduce oil buildup on the skin.

Blotting Papers

Someone with oily skin should wash their face twice a day, once in the morning to clear off the night time buildup and any bacteria it came in contact with such as from pillows, and once at night to remove the pollutants from the day.

When build-up occurs throughout the day, blotting papers can be used to remove the oil and leave skin looking and feeling dryer. These are available in most places that sell cosmetics so they can be purchased with normal skincare items.

Clay Masks

Clay masks - and even a honey mask specifically - are widely recommended for oily skin as they help remove oil, clear the buildup, absorb the excess, and also benefit other skin concerns during the same use.

A clay mask is also great for unclogging pores and removing other bacteria and buildup from the skin. For a homemade version of a honey mask, make an oatmeal paste, add honey, and use as a normal mask.

Aloe Vera

Another concern that can arise with oily skin is that some patches may become flaky, especially if harsher soaps and skincare options are used. Aloe vera, well-known for its use on burns and other skin concerns, will also help with those flaky patches and is often used by people with oily skin.

Toner And Mositurizer

As with many other things, prevention is easier than treatments. Preventing oily skin can be as simple as finding the right gentle cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. A good toner is key for those with oily skin as it helps to close the pores and will not allow oil or other pollutants to clog the pores and lead to acne outbreaks.

A light moisturizer can help bring balance to the skin and keep it from becoming too dry, but without increasing oil production. Heavy moisturizers and makeups can cause the problem to worsen by irritating the skin and causing increased oil production. The key to fighting oily skin is light, tone, and blotting papers and masks for the high stress times or hormonal shifts.
