Glycerol: For Your Most Hydrated Skin

Trusted Health Products

Written By Jennifer Raskin / Reviewed By Ray Spotts

The sugar alcohol known as glycerol only sounds intimidating, but it’s all around us in the things we use every day from our moisturizers to our toothpaste and everything in between.

Often called glycerin - and labeled as such on your products - this sugar alcohol helps protect skin from irritants. Thanks to its humectant nature, it attracts moisture from the air and into the skin.

Glycerol has a low molecular weight so it can ease right into the top layer of your skin and then continue to bring moisture deep down into your dermis along with it. You’ll be happy to know it’s a naturally occurring compound in your body, but in skincare it’s derived from plants making it a safe and natural component anyone can use for more hydrated skin.

What Else Can Glycerol Do for Skin?

When reading labels for your products, if you see “glycerol” or “glycerin,” that’s a win for your skin! It has plenty of great benefits to help you look your best.

Glycerol Moisturizes like you wouldn’t believe

Wondering if your new skin cream will keep your skin feeling super-hydrated or not? If you see glycerol in it, you’ll likely be pleased with your choice.

It’s incredibly effective at restoring hydration back to skin. If you have dry, parched, or cracked skin, this is one ingredient to seek out.

Glycerol Protects your skin

Often, glycerol is the wonder ingredient in many pharmaceutical-grade creams that your doctor may prescribe for repairing skin elasticity and correcting extreme dryness. Glycerol is phenomenal at getting skin back to a soft, supple, and moisturized state.

Plus, now that everyone is washing their hands even more, it can add back what those harsh soaps and sanitizers strip away with our natural skin oils.

Glycerol Prevents moisture from escaping

Not only does glycerol restore hydration, but it also prevents it from depleting. When you use oils or serums, they penetrate your skin barrier and get absorbed by your skin.

But thicker products that usually contain glycerol are there to lock in all that nutrition deep in the skin by covering the outside to support the protective skin barrier. By preventing that loss of moisture in the skin, it lets those natural oils do what they were designed to do – nourish skin and repair it to a healthy state.

Using products that have glycerol in them can help you get that soft, smooth, and healthy skin you’re looking for. It’s extremely rare to have any negative impacts from using glycerol, so check out your labels and make sure you get some of it in your skincare creams and lotions!
