Not only are pomegranates delicious, but they're also extremely nutritious. Here are eight benefits of consuming pomegranates that are backed by scientific research.

Fight Inflammation with pomegranates

Inflammation is a significant contributing factor to many of the most common diseases, such as diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer's disease. Pomegranates have been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory properties due to the punicalagins that comprise this tasty fruit.

Punicalagins are strong antioxidants that can lower inflammation in the GI tract and cancer cells. In fact, a study discovered that inflammation was reduced by 30 percent in diabetics who drank just one cup of pomegranate juice a day. Although pomegranates are often overlooked, their juice has three times more antioxidant activity than green tea and red wine.

Get Essential Nutrients with pomegranates

Another one of the many benefits of pomegranate is its essential nutrients that provide your body with strength and protection from disease. Pomegranates are loaded with fiber, protein, folate and potassium. They're also high in vitamins C and K. In addition to its nutritional value, pomegranates also contain punicic acid, which has been shown to combat cancer and obesity.

Reduce the Risk of Heart Disease with pomegranates

Each year, approximately 655,000 Americans die from cardiovascular disease. That's one person every 36 seconds. Although heart disease is extremely complex and brought on by a variety of factors, studies have shown that pomegranate juice can be an effective method in lowering your risk of developing the disease.

For example, one study found that consuming pomegranate juice improves blood circulation, which prevents stiffened arteries. Another study discovered that pomegranate juice reduced cholesterol in individuals with type 2 diabetes, which can prevent plaque buildup from contributing to heart disease.

Combats Arthritis with pomegranates

Pomegranates contain organic compounds known as flavonols, which have been shown to treat various forms of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis, as well as other types of chronic joint pain. One study conducted on mice revealed that pomegranate extract relieved arthritis by obstructing enzymes that are known to contribute to joint damage. While it's not yet known if this effect extends to humans, the initial findings are promising.

Strengthen Memory with pomegranates

If you've been feeling forgetful lately, pomegranates may be able to help you with that. Pomegranate juice is loaded with polyphenols, which are micronutrients that have been shown to improve memory and treat neurodegenerative diseases.

One study found that those who drank pomegranate juice every day performed better on memory tests than those who were given a placebo. If you find pomegranate juice to be too tart for your taste buds, try blending it into a fruit smoothie.

Replenish Skin with pomegranates

In addition to its many health benefits, pomegranates have also been shown to hydrate skin, making it appear healthy and radiant. Many dermatologists recommend drinking pomegranate juice if you have dry or dull skin. You can also apply pomegranate juice to your face, as its high levels of Vitamin C can soften your skin and improve its overall texture.

Promote Hair Growth with pomegranates

If you're looking for long, luscious locks, look no further. Pomegranates are packed with antioxidants that stimulate blood circulation in the scalp, which encourages hair to grow longer and healthier.

You can also use pomegranate oil or create your own hydrating hair mask by grinding together pomegranate seeds and yogurt to form a paste. These treatments can be used to deep-condition your hair and combat unwanted frizz.

Increase Endurance with pomegranates

If you've been trying to get in some extra miles on the treadmill, pomegranate juice can increase your endurance by slowing down the onset of fatigue. This is due to dietary nitrates, which are largely present in pomegranates. A study found that athletes who consumed just one gram of pomegranate extract before they exercised demonstrated increased blood flow and exercise endurance.

Pomegranates have been shown to have numerous advantages for both your physical and mental health. Be sure to pick up some pomegranates on your next trip to the grocery store if you want to reap these benefits.
