7 Telling Clues You Have Hypersensitive Skin

When you have hypersensitive skin, it goes beyond simply being easy to irritate. Most often, it’s a symptom of something else going on.

Whether it’s the weather or something you’ve come into contact with, spotting the clues your skin gives you will help determine if your skin is hypersensitive.

Reactive skin is hypersensitive skin

Often, products you use daily might be the reason your skin has gone hypersensitive. Detergents and household products are usually common aggressors, but the stuff you put directly on your skin could be bothering it.

If you feel itchiness, dryness, or reddening after using a product, discontinue use.

Real redness and hypersensitive skin

When you have hypersensitive skin, it often shows it with real redness. Sometimes it’s red bumps, flushing or blushing, a rash, or red blood vessels just under the surface.

If you remove what’s irritating you - perhaps a new skin cream - you’ll notice the redness will go away in most cases.

Excessively dry skin and hypersensitive skin

Most people associate acne and breakouts with oily skin, however those with hypersensitive skin have dry skin more often than not. This perpetuates a vicious cycle of breakouts because your skin produces more sebum to combat the dryness.

The sebum traps dead skin flakes, dirt, pollutants, and bacteria in the pores, leading to breakouts. In colder weather when the air is dry, it can make things even worse.

Finding a gentle moisturizer to penetrate skin before it dries out too much can help reduce your hypersensitivity.

Frequent rashes and hypersensitive skin

One of the hallmarks of hypersensitive skin is when it breaks out into a rash. If you find a red, dry, bumpy or flaky rash, think about what triggers you’ve come into contact with.

Hypersensitive skin is easy to sunburn

Hypersensitive skin is so much more prone to burning in the sun. Every time you leave your house, even if you aren’t going to actively sit in the sun, wear sunscreen.

Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are the best ingredients to look for to minimize irritation to your skin type. It should also be SPF 30 or higher.

When actively in the sun, make sure to reapply your broad spectrum sun protection every 60 to 80 minutes.

Burning sensations from products and hypersensitive skin

For those with hypersensitive skin, the protective skin barrier is often compromised. This leads to burning or irritation when applying certain products to your skin.

Instead, stick to products labeled as “hypoallergenic” or “for sensitive skin” to keep irritation at bay.

Irritating fragrances and hypersensitive skin

Perfumes smell great but for hypersensitive skin, they’re a nightmare. Fragrance-free beauty products are the best choice, even with natural formulations.

Plus, even essential oils can upset hypersensitive skin. Clove, peppermint, and cinnamon are notorious for agitating those with easy-to-irritate skin.

Should you notice any of these signs for hypersensitive skin, schedule an appointment with your dermatologist to have things checked out. Once you determine what’s irritating your skin, it will be much easier to bring things under control.
