4 Tips To Take Care Of Your Skin This Winter

A lot of people notice significant changes in how their skin looks and feels when temperatures drop and winter winds start to blow. Here are four simple but effective things that you can do to keep your skin looking and feeling good this winter.

1. Stay Hydrated To Take Care Of Your Skin This Winter

The amount of water that you drink can have a considerable effect on your skin’s texture and appearance. Make it a point to start every day with at least eight to 16 ounces of water because people tend to get a little dehydrated just when they’re sleeping.

You should make water your go-to drink instead of sugary sodas or juices, and drink it continuously throughout the day. Staying hydrated with plenty of water is a fundamental part of keeping your skin healthy at a cellular level during the winter months.

2. Find Out if You Have Hard Water To Take Care Of Your Skin This Winter

If your skin feels irritated after you take a shower or bath during the winter, you may think it’s simply because your skin is dry and whatever product you’re using to cleans it is causing the problem. However, the problem may actually be in the water that you’re using to cleanse your skin.

When water has a high concentration of mineral deposits, it can leave your skin feeling itchy, irritated, or dry. Using a water softener can remove excess hard materials from your home’s water supply.

When you use cleaner and softer water, you may notice that your skin feels better hydrated and is less prone to irritation in cold winter weather. You won’t have a dry or itchy feeling right after you step out of the shower or bath.

3. Treat Cracked Skin Carefully To Take Care Of Your Skin This Winter

If your skin has become so dry and rough to the point that it’s cracking and sore, your first instinct may be to use some moisturizing lotion. When your skin reaches this point of irritation, however, your best course of action is to use a healing ointment.

Any part of your skin that’s actually open should be treated with an antibiotic open to expedite healing and prevent infection. Skin that isn’t open but very scaly or sore can be treated with a regular ointment that’s made of mostly petroleum-based ingredients.

You may also benefit from using an oil-based product such as vitamin E oil. This hydrating oil is great for restoring your skin’s texture, and it also stimulates collagen production to help keep your skin thick and firm.

Ideally, you should choose ointments and oils that are made from all-natural or organic ingredients. Highly processed chemical ingredients can cause imbalances in your skin’s pH levels and further irritate skin that’s bothering you.

4. Protect Your Lips To Take Care Of Your Skin This Winter

In addition to the skin on your face and hands, you have to take extra thorough care of your lips during the winter. Lips are very sensitive and somewhat thinner than other parts of your skin.

They’re constantly exposed to the elements and rarely covered up by clothing. Also, simply being in contact with the moisture inside of your mouth makes them extra vulnerable to irritation when it’s cold or windy.

If your lips become severely chapped in cold weather, you may observe that they crack or peel. Moreover, they may start to sting, and getting them back to normal can take upwards of a week.

The best approach to caring for your lips in the winter is a proactive one. Use a lip balm that doesn’t come off easily, and be sure to bring it with you when you head out anywhere.

The feeling of needing a lip balm can be really uncomfortable when you forget one. Also, you have to be conscientious about how the sun can dry out or damage your lips, even in the winter.

When you’re going to be outside on a bright day for any period of time, you should use a lip balm that has a sunblock with at least 15 SPF.
