It's a common misconception that a diligent, intense skin-care regimen is necessary to keep your skin healthy. While going the extra mile with special products and treatments has its benefits, maintaining general skin health doesn't need to be that complicated.

However, there are a few beneficial routines that will ensure you don't suffer major problems or premature aging with your skin.

Sun Protection

Regular sun exposure can wreak havoc on your skin if you don't protect it. Without sunscreen or other sun protection, you'll be susceptible to wrinkles, toughened skin, and age spots. More importantly, you'll also be at increased risk for skin cancer.

Whenever you're going to be exposed to the sun's rays, make sure to generously apply sunscreen of at least SPF 15 to any uncovered skin areas. Also, consider staying in the shade as much as you can; your skin will thank you for it.

Regular Dermatologist Visits

Making regular visits to reputable dermatologists is crucial for avoiding major skin issues. When you schedule an appointment with a place like Advanced Dermatology of Northern California, the specialized doctors will be able to check your moles and look for any red flags or signs of skin cancer.

Plus, they can give you helpful advice for keeping your skin healthy. If you can manage it, try to get in to see one of these dermatologists on a yearly basis.

Avoid Smoking

Most people understand the negative effects that smoking can have on their lungs, but many don't realize how bad it is for their skin as well. In addition to prematurely aging your skin and causing wrinkles, smoking cigarettes also puts you at greater risk for skin cancer.

If you're a long-term smoke, quitting is far from easy, but it's a very worthwhile pursuit for your overall health.

Eat Healthier

Improving your diet will make your skin look and feel better. Try to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and don't forget to drink plenty of water. Having at least a few glasses each day will keep your skin soft and hydrated and prevent those pesky cracks and dry spots.

Overall, most of the habits and routines that are good for your skin will also improve your overall health. So, by putting a bit more effort into maintaining the health of your skin, you'll likely start seeing benefits in other areas as well.

Remember, healthy skin may seem like a given when you're young, but in the long run, you'll be glad that you took proper care of this important part of your body.
