16 Top Ways To Keep Your Skin Healthy

With a new year – and the winter season - upon us, it's a good time to re-visit your skincare routine. We all know that winter months aren't kind to our skin, and more often than not, we end up with dry, dull, and flaky skin that makes us look older than we are.

Here's a list of top tips on how you should treat your skin during the cold months:

1. Always remove makeup before going to bed

This may sound like a really obvious one but let me tell you that it's still not happening in many households. Makeup clogs pores and damages skin cells, so we allow our skin to breathe and regenerate overnight by removing it before going to bed.

Also, try using cleansing wipes instead of regular facial cleansers – the wipes will do all the work for you with just one wipe, while regular cleanser takes time to be absorbed, which means that you're removing half of it with your towel.

2. Use a cleansing brush

Applying cleansing wipes is great, but they are even more effective if combined with a facial cleansing brush. This will exfoliate the skin, remove makeup and deep cleanse pores, all at the same time. The result will be healthier skin that is squeaky clean yet moisturized.

3. Exfoliate

We don't know how many of you are familiar with any skin scrub, but if you're not – you can find them in local stores. Exfoliating removes old skin cells and brightens your complexion in a matter of seconds.

Before using any skin scrub, ensure that it is tested by reputable product testing companies like OGLF. This is the safest way of using a beauty product you have never used.

4. Moisturize

Moisturizing is another important step that most people aren't doing properly. The key is to use a moisturizer that's lighter than your actual skin type because you want it to be absorbed quickly and leave no residue behind.

This will prevent clogged pores and allow the product to penetrate deeper into your skin, thus making it healthier from within too.

5. Don't forget about hands

When's the last time you gave your hands some love? If it's been a while, now is the perfect time to take care of that pesky dry skin. As previously said, our skin becomes drier throughout the winter months, thus we must treat those sensitive areas of our bodies accordingly.

You can use regular body lotion or body butter, but if that's not an option for you, mix some sugar and coconut oil in a bowl and scrub your hands with it. By massaging the mixture into your skin and rinsing it off several times, you will get rid of all the dry skin cells for good.

6. Lemon face mask

You can either use lemon juice or freshly squeezed lemon. Make sure you don't use the one that comes from the bottle as it won't work as well. You can either mix lemon juice with water or apply it directly to your face and neck. The acidity in the lemon will remove dirt and germs while also lightening dark spots on your face.

7. Applying the mask on dry skin

Although a lemon mask is best applied on damp skin, you need to ensure that your skin absorbs it quickly and doesn't start burning due to its acidic nature. If having extremely sensitive skin isn't an option, be mindful of the time you're keeping the mask on your face.

8. Don't forget to use your SPF

We all dream of great skin, but how do you get it without spending too much money or time on expensive treatments and products? You need to know how to care for your body properly.

Wearing sunscreen during the cold months might seem like a waste of time, but in reality it's just as important as the antioxidants that are being sold on every corner.

Try using moisturizers with SPF or use your favorite daily moisturizer with sunscreen in it. There are plenty of high-quality sunscreens available in local drugstores, so you don't have to spend a fortune to protect your skin.

9. Make a lip scrub

Just like your hands, this time of the year you need to give more attention to your lips as well. Due to cold weather and low temperatures, they tend to dry out even more than usual. This is why I advise everyone not to neglect their pouty part.

You can prepare a quick lip scrub at home by mixing one teaspoon of brown sugar with 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil. Scrub your lips gently for a minute or two, and you're finished.

10. Adding coffee to your routine

Adding coffee to your skincare routine is great for your skin. You can mix the ground coffee with hot water or add it to your daily face wash. It will act as an exfoliator and unclog your pores, all while smelling nice too. I've tried it myself and was pleasantly surprised with the results.

11. Egg whites

If you're simply out of ideas on what to do with all that leftover egg white, then here's a tip for you. Use egg white as a skin-tightening face mask and see the difference in 10 minutes. Add the egg white to your favorite moisturizer, apply it on unwashed skin, leave it on for almost 10 minutes, and wash it off with cold water.

12. Milk is your friend

We know milk is great for drinking, but it's even better when used as a home remedy. So next time you have irritated skin, mix some cold milk with lemon juice and apply it to your face. It will soothe the irritation, improve your complexion and remove all the dirt from your pores.

13. Egg yolks

If you have time, patience, and a bit of money to spare – egg yolks are another great home skincare product. Sieve the white from the egg yolk and mix it with one teaspoon of olive oil. Let it stay on your face for 30 minutes before rinsing it off with warm water.

14. Cucumber is your best friend

We all love cucumbers, but did you know that it's also one of the healthiest foods on earth? Cucumbers contain vitamins A, B1, B2, and E, which improve blood circulation to the skin.

It prevents wrinkles and sagging skin, so next time you don't have time for a full face mask. For about 20 minutes, place a piece of cucumber over your closed eyelids.

15. Raw potatoes can do wonders

This one is my favorite of all the home remedies mentioned in this article. If you want to get rid of dark circles, pimples, or redness on your skin, slice the potato and hold it over your skin for about 10 minutes. You can either use fresh or leftover potatoes because both work great in this case.

16. Use cinnamon to get rid of cellulite

Cinnamon is a miracle product that makes your food taste great and helps you get rid of cellulite. Mix some cinnamon with honey and lemon juice and apply it to your skin once a week for best results.

These are the 16 favorite home remedies for healthier, younger, and glowing skin. Using these simple tricks will make your everyday routine more enjoyable. Who knew that getting a healthy, soft, and clear complexion could be so easy?
