What You Need To Do To Recover From Dental Implants

The world of cosmetic dentistry has grown significantly over recent decades. With more and more focus on personal hygiene and looks, the demand for this type of dentistry is through the roof right now. If you're considering undergoing a dental implant procedure, here are some things you need to know about recovering properly.

Pain Is Managed By Over-The-Counter Medications

The surgery can cause swelling, bruising, and pain for the patient. Most can manage this pain with over-the-counter medications like Ibuprofen or Motrin. In some severe cases, you may need to get prescription medication to handle the pain. Most patients' pain goes away within 48 hours after the initial implant surgery.

Stitches Dissolve Within Weeks

When you get dental implants, you'll have stitches put into the gums. Most dentists will use a dissolvable stitching material. It typically takes two to three weeks for the stitches to fully dissolve. If for some reason the stitches are causing you excessive pain, you can have them removed in the office. If your dentist didn't use dissolvable stitches, then you'll need to have them removed within two weeks of your surgery.

Brush Your Teeth Like Normal

Your dentist will recommend brushing your other teeth as normal. When it comes to the implant sites, you may need to wait for a couple of days for the tenderness to go away before you brush them. However, you'll need to keep up with brushing them as you would your other teeth to keep the gums in those areas healthy throughout the entire healing process.

Hot Salt Rinses After Eating

It's best to perform hot salt rinses after eating to get rid of excess food that may be stuck in the implant site. You'll want to use water that is warm but isn't so hot that it scolds your mouth. Mix in a teaspoon of salt and swirl it around in your mouth near the implant sites. After 30 seconds, spit out the hot salt rinse. Proceed to wash your mouth with regular water to rinse off any of the salt resin that was left behind.

Taking care of your teeth after having dental implants installed isn't too difficult to do. You should speak with your doctor before the procedure to understand what is expected of you post-surgery. The more you know beforehand, the more comfortable you will be performing your own self-care after the procedure has taken place.
