Understanding Dental Implants And When You Might Benefit From Them

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are surgically inserted into the jawbone and then anchored in place permanently. The implants provide a foundation for replacement teeth or dentures and function as anchors of the real teeth to keep them securely rooted in the jaw.

Dental implants have been in use since the 1960s, but due to improving technology over the past few years, the success rates have skyrocketed. Currently, some 10 million people worldwide have dental implants and an additional two million are treated each year.

The difference between 20 years ago and today is that a dental implant at that time had a 50 percent survival rate after five years, while today it's 90 percent.

What Are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the closest replacement for a real tooth root that can be achieved. Dental implants act like natural teeth and to a high degree, can perform the same functions.

For example, if you have lost a tooth in the upper jaw, your dentist may be able to provide a dental bridge or denture in its place. A bridge is fixed between two adjacent teeth and is not very stable.

A denture is supported by a row of teeth in the lower jaw leaving an unnatural wide gap. As time goes by, these gaps can widen to the point where not only your smile looks different but your jawbone starts to shift and collapse causing facial sagging and the shape of your face to change. A dental implant will allow you to have a more natural-looking smile and will restore that missing tooth or teeth giving you back your self-confidence.

Are Dental Implants Safe?

Dental implants are the most successful dental restoration in history with very high survival rates. Each year more than one million dental implants are placed worldwide with a success rate of between 95 and 99 percent.

Are Dental Implants Expensive?

Dental implants are a very cost-effective and long-term investment in your oral health. Depending on the number of teeth involved, the cost varies. This may sound very expensive, but it's important to remember that the cost can be spread over 10 years through various financing options.

It's very important to factor in the time saved by not having to go back for periodic check-ups maintaining conventional dentures. Are you looking for professional dental implant services? Visit a local dentist, like Total Freedom Dental Implant Center to get your wonderful smile back.
