Dental phobias are not rare, and as the acknowledgment of phobias grows the methods to deal with them are also increasing and becoming more easily talked about. Options include things like hypnotherapy and exposure treatment, as well as meditation and other anxiety-helping methods.

Hypnotherapy For Dental Phobia

Hypnotherapy is a method in which a trained therapist can help put the patient in a relaxed, deep-breathing state. The patient is susceptible to suggestions and ideas from the therapist and often it is used as a way to release bad habits or heal trauma.

It can also be used to help overcome dental phobia. In addition to talk therapy, which can often be done with the same therapist, it can help to get to the root cause of the phobias and allow the patient to move past them or to heal the root cause to face the phobia easier.

Exposure Therapy For Dental Phobia

Exposure therapy is a method in which the patient exposes themselves to the thing they are afraid of, or face their phobia, beginning in small ways and working up to facing it full on. This can begin as imagining the scenario and how to manage it and how to respond.

It may involve first calling the dentist to set up a consultation, taking small steps toward a full appointment, a cleaning, and then any repairs such as cavity fillings that are required. This allows for adjustments and progress to come in manageable steps rather than facing the full experience at once.

Meditation For Dental Phobia

Many phobias can appear with increased anxiety that involves increased heart rate, shallow breathing, and a feeling of fear. To calm these anxiety symptoms, meditation and slow breathing exercises can be useful.

The slowed breathing will lead to a slower heart rate and bring the body’s fight or flight reaction back down to a manageable level. Meditations done in preparation for the appointments that cause nervousness and worry can help to prepare for the appointments and allow for the coping mechanisms to become automatic and readily available as needed.

Dental Phobia And Your Dentist

For additional help with dental treatments when a dental phobia is present it is important to tell the dentist and the hygienist that the phobia is present. They have many ways to help beginning with explaining procedures and what will happen next, offering moral support and encouragement, and even using mild sedation as necessary to help patients overcome their phobias and work towards a fear-free and calm experience.

Dental phobia is a fairly common phobia and is recognized by dentists everywhere. There are ways to both manage the phobia as it occurs with each appointment but also ways to get to the root of the phobia and to leave the effects of it behind.

From hypnotherapy, meditation, and exposure therapy, there is something for almost everyone. An open dialogue with your dental care provider can be a key piece in overcoming dental phobia.
