Engaging in sporting activities is essential to human life. Apart from the physical fitness and health benefits, sports also teach us valuable life lessons such as teamwork, discipline, focus, and endurance.

Regardless of the kind of sport you participate in, you can’t rule out the possibilities of injuries taking place. According to the American Dental Assistants Association, one of the most common sports-related injuries occurs in the mouth. In this article, we shall discuss the best ways to take care of your teeth in case you sustain an injury during sports.

Rinse Mouth Using Hydrogen Peroxide

Depending on the severity of the teeth injury, bleeding of the gums can sometimes occur. Therefore, you should rinse your mouth using hydrogen peroxide as a first-aid measure. The hydrogen peroxide will protect your mouth from developing infections as a disinfectant.

Also, it will help stop bleeding sustained from bruises and prevent gum inflammation. Note that hydrogen peroxide solution is harmful if swallowed.

Apply a Cold Compress

If your gum tissues are bruised from the sports injury, then applying pressure using a cold gauze, folded towel, or any other suitable cloth will help prevent swelling. Also, a cold compress along the gum line will restrict the flow of blood to the affected area.

This practice can significantly reduce bleeding. Preferably, you should consider applying a cold press frequently throughout the day.

Take Painkillers

More often, toothaches can be caused by fractured or cracked teeth from sports injuries. Or it could be that your nerve endings are affected in one way or the other. Therefore, if you feel a dull, sharp, or throbbing pain in your teeth, you can consider taking anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

Select What You Eat

Depending on the injury sustained in the mouth, selecting what you eat is probably a good idea. There are foods that will further affect your injury. For instance, you should avoid taking hard-to-chew foods or carbonated beverages.

If you want to aid faster healing, think of soft foods such as soup, black tea, and yogurt. Also, foods rich in vitamins C and K will improve your immunity and facilitate blood clots, respectively.

Schedule a Doctor’s Visit

If, after practicing proper dental hygiene and observing other relevant measures, you still notice pain worsening, then you should visit your dentist right away.

Look for a dentist who is always ready to offer you quality dental checkups and treatment - whether your teeth get weakened, cracked, gums bruised, or you want to seek assistance as soon as possible.

For example, if your teeth have sustained too much damage, they may benefit from getting crowns added. Dental crowns can help treat teeth before the damage becomes too serious to repair.  Do not hesitate to visit an expert as soon as possible.

Dental injuries are one common form of sports injury that you can’t avoid. Whether it’s your lips, gums, teeth, or tongue that is damaged, it’s important that you seek proper treatment on time. The above-mentioned are the top ways you can practice to facilitate faster healing and recovery.
