How Adult Oral Care Is Different From Oral Care For Children

If you have children, you might want to be sure you find them a good dentist. That’s because research shows that taking care of their oral health during their childhood makes for more positive outcomes when they are adults.

Other factors can certainly contribute in a negative way, like insurance issues for example. However, the core belief is that when children are taught proper oral hygiene early on and are used to going to the dentist for their checkups, they will carry on these good habits into adulthood.

Adult oral care differs from oral care for children in quite a few ways:

Children lose their baby teeth

Losing teeth as a child is a rite of passage, one that is met with glee and delight as the visit from the Tooth Fairy is anticipated. But for adults, losing a tooth is a very bad thing. Whether it becomes so infected it falls out or there’s an injury that leads to tooth loss, adults have greater problems when faced with tooth loss.

Cavities are the most common problem for kids

The CDC states that cavities are the biggest common chronic disease for kids in the U.S. You might think that it’s not a big deal since the baby teeth will fall out and be replaced by the adult set. However, that kind of thinking will lead to worse problems down the road like gum diseases and infections. Teaching kids to take care of their teeth now will help them avoid major problems in the future and keep their smiles bright.

Adults tend to suffer more bone loss in the jaw

If you were scared to go to the dentist before, you might want to schedule an appointment fast. In your youth, it is easier to correct problems that arise. As an adult, it becomes more difficult and expensive. Adults tend to suffer from insufficient bone presence between the roots and bone loss. Bones stop growing by this time, which makes it harder for your aging oral tissues to adjust.

No one ever wants bad news from the dentist so don’t make it worse! Schedule an appointment and bring your children in too. By taking care of oral hygiene in your family, you’ll all have brighter and healthier futures to look forward to.

Remember, oral health can absolutely affect your overall health. Regular trips to the dentist and proper oral hygiene can keep you from suffering a heart attack or stroke as well as other serious conditions. This is one of the key differences in oral care for adults over children as children can more easily prevent this outcome.
