Charcoal Toothpaste – Is It Good For You?

Toothpaste is a growing market and as more and more types, kinds, flavors and brands are created, it becomes harder to choose the right one for you. One of the newer toothpaste options is activated charcoal.

This charcoal toothpaste is made in much the same way as many other activated charcoal products: the charcoal is in a powder form and has undergone treatments to make it more porous. The intent is for the charcoal to attract the toxins, germs, and bacteria, and brush them away with the toothpaste itself, causing teeth to be less stained and whiter, as well as cleaner.

Risk Factors

Risk factors with this toothpaste not only include its abrasiveness causing additional wear and damage to the dentin, but also the chance it could interfere with some oral medications. As this type of toothpaste is not regulated specifically and checked, the grittiness of each tube of toothpaste as well as each type or brand can vary.

By not having the correct density and grittiness it could be too abrasive and wear away the enamel faster then others. This will leave the dentin unprotected and increase cavities, sensitivity, and pain.

Active Charcoal

These toothpastes aren’t created the same as others so the charcoal may have the ability to attract not only toxins and germs but also the active ingredients in oral medications. The active charcoal should be in a small enough amounts that most medications should not be affected but there is a possibility and that may not be worth the risk for the limited rewards.

It is important to check with a doctor, pharmacist, or your dentist, to see if this is the right toothpaste choice for you and be sure it is indeed safe with your current medications, and to check again when you are put on any new medications.

While the world of toothpaste choices keeps getting bigger, it is important to choose the right toothpaste for you. Activated charcoal is available in assorted toothpastes with claims of stain reducing, germ attracting, and protecting teeth from damage. Its porous charcoal can scrub the teeth clean and remove stains, but may also damage the enamel while doing so.

 Charcoal toothpaste is the only toothpaste that also includes the risk of interfering with oral medications and any fillings or dental restorations, so it is important to consult with your dentist to see if this is the right toothpaste for you.
