You never saw it coming. Your accident turned your life upside down on the spin of a dime. You've been changed by the experience forever. Your body may recover eventually, but your mind will never forget this moment in time. Focusing on your recovery is the most important thing you can do right now, not only physically but also emotionally and mentally.
Be Patient with Yourself
The immediate aftermath of an accident can feel like you’re going a million miles a minute, and at the same time far too slow. Depending on the severity of your injuries, you may end up having to stay in the hospital or attend physical therapy.
No matter what though, it will take time for your body to recover well enough to be at the point it was before. This can be frustrating, as you want to do what you were capable of pre-accident. It’s important to remember that you need to give yourself time to heal, both physically and mentally.
You May Need Additional Support at Home
Once you are released from the hospital, the road to recovery may be a long one. You may not be able to take care of yourself, especially at first. Family members, friends, or healthcare professionals may need to assist you. Advanced injury care may be required, whether you need physical rehabilitation or additional surgeries.
There is also the chance that you may be forced to cope with the permanent effects of your injuries. Expect to take an extensive period of time to focus on your recovery.
It Can be an Emotional Roller Coaster
Going through an accident of any kind, big or small, can lead to many emotional and mental highs and lows. You may be faced with anxiety and depression, or suffer symptoms of PTSD. Don't be afraid to ask for help. A therapist can help you to work through your anger, frustration, and fear.
Learn how to effectively work through your feelings so they don't overwhelm you. Learn what you can do to take your mind off of a negative path so you can steer it in a positive direction.
Learn How to Adapt
You will need to make adjustments while you’re recovering from an accident. Your strength, energy, and stamina may be much lower in the beginning. Expect to sleep more. Listen to your body and rest. Celebrate small victories as you take each step forward. But also be prepared to take a few steps back.
Accept your limitations. You may need to gradually work up to what you did in the past. People around you will need to be flexible as well, adjusting their expectations.
Feeling like yourself after an accident is not going to happen overnight. It may take weeks or months for your body to heal. A strong support system and positive attitude will help you to move forward.
