Have you ever paid attention to how much saliva you produce during the day? If you’re, um, normal, then the answer is probably no. You just produce a lot and it serves a lot of different purposes. Although it gets a bad rap because it has germs (and people spit), in fact saliva is a good indicator of how healthy your mouth is, and how well you’re able to eat and digest.
Here’s one thing to think about: You don’t notice saliva because there’s nothing you can actively do in order to create it. It’s a bodily function, and saliva is produced by several glands. Its production increases when you’re eating or even just craving a particular food.
And it’s not just water, either. It’s made up of a whole bunch of stuff, including calcium and minerals. What else do you need to know about saliva? This graphic explains it.
