A clogged drain is one of the most problematic issues at home. There are home remedies, and when they fail, you can always consult professional septic tank services. Small incidences of drain clogging may hide significant plumbing issues, and with time you will find that you are spending a lot of money on repairs.
If you encounter frequent clogging, you can consult your plumber to see whether there are any issues with your piping system and repair it early before it can cause significant problems in the future, which will be expensive. These are some of the home solutions which you can use to clear up your drain.
Using a plunger
It is arguably the most popular method. A plunger should be an essential in your home, and you can have one for the kitchen and another for the washroom or other drainage pipes. It is easy to use, and unclogs you drain easily. A plunger is affordable and you can find it at your local store.
Use a plunger by covering the drain, then press and pull almost immediately, and you can repeat the movements, until you see water draining rapidly. At this stage you will have succeeded in unclogging the drainage using a plunger.
Use hot water and dish soap
Mix liquid dish soap with about two liters of water and boil. It is quick and easy, and you can pour the mixture down the sink. The results are not guaranteed, as it only works well when it is a grease clog. It melts the grease and clears the drainage, and it gets back to normal. It is not a method you can rely on unless you know the cause of the clogging.
Mix baking soda with vinegar
It is a good alternative to a mixture of dish soap and hot water. You need the following procedure to make it a success.
- Pour a generous amount of baking soda in the drain without adding water
- Get a rag or metal stopper and pour a half cup of vinegar, and quickly, cover the drain using either of the two.
- The mixture leads to a reaction which might unclog the drain.
- Leave for 30 minutes then try rinsing the drain with water.
Utilize a wire coat hanger
If you have a wire coat hanger, then it comes in handy to unclog your drain. Start out by straightening the backside of the hanger and leave the hook. Push the hook down the pipe drain to pull out any objects that are blocking the passageway and discard the items safely. After the process, make sure to disinfect the sink area, or any other surrounding where you operated. You can then flush hot water down the pipe.
Why home solutions?
They are green remedies that save you a lot of money, by preserving the stature of your pipes, and avoid dispensing harmful chemicals into the environment. You might have seen that you can use sulfuric acid or sodium hydroxide.
They are synthetic cleaners and they will wear out your pipe system, no matter if it is metal or plastic. They are cheap and work faster, but they are not worth your investment in the long-term.
Final Thoughts
Home remedies to unclogging are trial and error, and they may not be successful, and you may have to consult professional septic tank services. You can implement them as quick fixes, and if the problem persists, you should hire professionals to analyze your drainage system, as it could be the problem.
There are more advanced cleaning methods which you might not have at your home, for example, high-pressure water jets or cable drain cleaners.
