Do You Know What To Do In Medical Emergencies?

Written By Luke Douglas / Reviewed By Ray Spotts

It doesn’t matter what sort of medical emergency you’re facing, you have to react quickly and do whatever you can to minimize the damage. All medical emergencies are risky, dangerous, and potentially life-threatening, which is why reacting on time is the key. This is the best way to save someone’s life.

So, in case you ever find yourself in the middle of a medical emergency, here are a few things you need to do.

Stay calm and react quickly in medical emergencies

These may sound like two of the most useless tips in the world, but you’d be surprised to learn how practical they may be. The problem most people have when they find themselves in a dangerous medical situation is the fact that they don’t know how to react. They panic, start feeling sick themselves and begin to sweat. This is why it’s so crucial to relax and stay calm because this is the only way to be able to provide some help to those who are hurt.

If you manage to stay calm, you’ll be able to lower your own blood pressure and react more quickly and accurately. This is crucial when you’re trying to save someone’s life and make them feel better. Being able to react in a matter of seconds could end up meaning the difference between life and death, which is why swift reactions are so vital.

Call 911 in medical emergencies

Unless you’re a doctor, a nurse, or some other kind of medical professional, the chances are you won’t be able to provide all the help a person in trouble might need. That’s why it’s so crucial to call the people who can do more than you. Calling 911 as soon as you notice something might be wrong is often the only way to save someone and help them go through a certain medical emergency, so don’t be afraid to do that yourself.

However, calling 911 isn’t as easy as you may think. You need to give the paramedics as many details as you can – the location of the patient, their state, their medical history, etc. – in just a few seconds.

Also, don’t be afraid to call them even if you’re not sure whether you’re witnessing a real medical emergency or not. After all, it’s always better to be safe than sorry!

Learn some basics for medical emergencies

In case you’re living with a person who’s in a difficult condition and requires constant care, being there for them might be difficult, but it’s a must. In these situations, being able to provide them with urgent help could be just the thing they’re looking for, which is why learning a few basic things about medicine and their condition in particular could go a long way.

The best way to do that is to take one of those useful certification courses and obtain a certification that will tell the world you’re capable of taking care of another person. For instance, taking a useful advanced cardiac life support course will teach you everything you need to know about cardiac life support and train you how to help people struggling with this condition.

This entire process will surely take a while and you’ll have to invest your time and patience, but it’s all going to be worth it in the end when you understand you’re completely capable of saving someone you care for on your own.

Learn how to perform CPR for medical emergencies

This is another simple solution that could mean quite a lot. In a number of dangerous situations – from a seizure to a heart attack – performing CPR might help patients regain consciousness and get better even before the paramedics arrive. This is particularly true if you’re living in a remote place and can’t expect the ambulance to come to you that quickly. In this case, performing CPR is the first thing you should do, but only if you know how.

This is why learning basic things about CPR is always a good idea. Just a few chest compressions might be enough to bring a person back to life and give them enough strength until the paramedics arrive.

Still, if you don’t know how to perform CPR, you can ask your 911 dispatcher to talk you through the procedure and tell you what you need to do. This might be hard at first and take some time, but it’s going to save a life – and that’s all that matters in the end!

In addition to these moves, some of the other things you should do in case of a medical emergency include treating burns, immobilizing hurt extremities, removing foreign objects, covering a heat stroke victim with damp sheets, wrapping someone who’s been electroshocked in blankets, performing the Heimlich maneuver, and sterilizing the wound.

All these things will make a huge difference, so learn how to do them as soon as you can!
