Strokes can greatly affect an individual's life. They can lead to life-long disabilities and can even cause death. Unfortunately, someone may be susceptible to having a stroke and not even know it. Here are some of the more common reasons why healthy and active patients might still suffer from a stroke.

Gender

An individual may be at risk of having a stroke simply because of their gender. Men tend to be at a greater risk of having a stroke at a younger age than women. However, the risk of women having a stroke does go up as they age. Because women tend to have strokes at a later age than men, they are also more likely to have lasting side effects.

Medication

Some medications may make patients more likely to have a stroke. Before a doctor prescribes a patient a certain medication, they need to make their patients aware of the risks. They should also discuss the signs of a stroke with the patient so that they can have a better idea of what to watch out for.

An individual may be more likely to have a stroke because of their ethnicity. Those that are of African American, Hispanic American, or Native American descent tend to have strokes more often than other ethnic groups. While there are a number of reasons why this might be, you do need to work with your doctor if you fall into one of these minorities.

Genetics

A lot of individuals don't realize that genetics play a huge factor in whether or not they are likely to have a stroke. They can eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly but still have a stroke because of a family history of them. This is why it's crucial for patients to let their doctors know whether or not anyone in their family has had a stroke before.

Despite being healthy and active, some patients might still suffer from a stroke for a variety of reasons. Because of this, it's important that an individual talks to their doctor about their risk of having a stroke.
