Feeling low on energy? You’re not the only one. There is a common misconception that increased energy can only come from caffeine or a bottled energy drink. In fact, there are numerous ways you can boost your vitality and zest for life naturally without caffeine.
Vitamins for healthier living
Energy drinks usually contain high doses of vitamin B12 along with plenty of ingredients that you don’t need like artificial sweeteners and flavoring. If you’re feeling droopy, you can start taking vitamin B supplements, increase your diet of nuts, leafy green vegetables, lean meats and fortified grains or try the Thrive experience to achieve optimal energy levels.
Chicory for healthier living
If the ritual of coffee drinking is important to you even as you strive to give up caffeine, consider making the slow switch to chicory. Roasted and ground, chicory is prepared the same way as coffee and gives off a similar smell and taste.
To gradually break your coffee dependence, begin swapping out a tablespoon of chicory for your regular ground coffee. Continue upping the proportion of chicory until you have eliminated the coffee altogether. You can still have your warm cup of “joe” every morning to start the day, just without the caffeine.
Tea for healthier living
Most teas also contain caffeine. A typical cup of black tea, for example, contains 47 milligrams of caffeine while a cup of green tea contains about 25. While this is significantly less than coffee’s whopping 95 milligrams of caffeine per cup, tea is by no means caffeine free.
Herbal teas are not true teas. They are a mixture of herbs and spices steeped in hot water. Rooibos tea or red tea is made from the leaves of the Aspalathus linearis shrub found in South Africa. It is a tasty alternative to coffee that doesn’t taste too herbaceous.
Water for healthier living
Everyone touts the benefits of drinking water and for good reason. If you are dehydrated, you’ll probably feel low energy. A glass of H2O is likely to perk you right up. If water is too bland for your tastes, there are plenty of infusions you can add to give it a little flavor.
Lemon adds crispness and vitamin C. Berries, cucumbers and watermelon are also great flavor options. Many people swear by the invigorating effect of water infused with ginger, mint, lemon and cucumber.
Maca for healthier living
Maca has been around since at least the Inca Empire was thriving in the 14th century, but it’s still relatively unknown to modern Americans, perhaps because it’s grown high in the Andes Mountains. There are recent case studies that show taking Maca powder before physical exertions improves energy and performance. This ground herb can easily be added to a smoothie or glass of milk.
Peppermint for healthier living
There are many forms of peppermint that you can use to increase your energy. Peppermint tea, candy or gum are options to refresh your mind and body. Another way to ingest this natural pick-me-up is through aromatherapy.
If you’re lagging late in the day, instead of grabbing a cup of coffee, roll-on peppermint essential oil to your inner wrists or temples. Alternatively, add the oil to an infuser to surround yourself with the scent that encourages deep breathing and oxygen intake.
Fresh Air for healthier living
If you’re feeling sleepy, take a walk, preferably in a sunny park or other green space. Walking briskly will get your blood flowing, and breathing deeply will get more oxygen to your brain, both of which are guaranteed to wake you up.
Nuts and Berries for healthier living
It may sound nuts but accessing your hunter-gatherer ancestors may be a source of untapped energy for you. Adding nuts to your diet will help you feel energized longer. Eating a handful of berries, particularly blueberries, will give you a little zip of energy without the associated crash that you often get from sugary foods.
Giving up caffeine is not an easy task, but it can be done especially if you have a plan in place to get your energy from other natural sources. Ultimately, your body will be happier, as will your wallet once you kick the latte habit.
