The immune system is incredibly complex and spread through the whole body as a multi-layered shield containing so many different types of cells and tissues. These have multiple roles: creating a barrier to invaders, ridding cells of toxins, and filtering what enters the body. It’s highly important to have your immune system strong and in balance, ready to support any part of your body. For centuries, herbs have been part of traditional medicines to support the immune system by reducing stress, supporting healthy responses, and natural microbial balances. Here we look at five of these herbs and their uses.

  1. Echinacea

Echinacea may be the most well known and studied herb in natural remedies and is used to support a healthy immunity response at the onset of an illness. It’s an antiviral and antibacterial herb whose polysaccharides stimulate the body into producing more white blood cells to fight an infection. It was used by Native Americans and has been used frequently since at least the 1800s. This herb is available either as an extract or a tablet which makes it very easy to take in regular doses when you’re starting to feel under the weather.

  1. Elderberry

Elderberries are critical to support your immune system daily during the entire flu season. They are chock full of quercetin, which is an antioxidant with antihistamine and anti-inflammatory properties. “As little as one teaspoon of elderberry syrup can fight your flu onset and also help ease sinus pain,” says Maurice Langdon, a writer at Academized and State Of Writing. “It also has a natural concentration of other antioxidants called anthocyanins. You can add elderberry to jams, wine, and syrups to ensure daily immunity support.”

  1. Astralagus

Astralagus is a central herb in traditional Chinese medicine and has been for centuries. It provides immune support at a deep cellular level and is thought to help the body fight stress. It promotes a healthful resistance from both physical and emotional stressors and supports your immune system’s functions. This herb contains anemia which improves your blood counts and when added to a soup or tea will help you fight fatigue and boost your immune health during cold season. As mentioned, it’s also considered to be an adaptogen, which means it helps your body’s adrenals to handle stress.

  1. Oregano

Oregano is a natural source of antioxidants whose primary use is to support a healthy gut flora. It’s more commonly known as a cooking ingredient but it’s been used for centuries to strengthen your immune system. Penny McCarthy, a journalist at Essayroo and Essay Services, explains why this herb is so good for immunity health: “Oregano is full of phytochemicals that build the body’s resistance to viruses and bacteria. Also, its oils are useful in supporting the healthy microbiome in our intestines.”

  1. Ginger

It’s becoming more and more popular to see ginger added to teas and tonics, and for good reason. Although it’s got a very strong taste, you can add it to so many different dishes or boil it in your tea with lemon and honey for a hot, soothing drink. Ginger is well known as a strong antihistamine and decongestant and is the perfect go-to when you’re fighting cold symptoms.

Herbs have been used for centuries to heal and strengthen our bodies’ functions, and they’re a natural and effective way to address many ailments. Many natural medicine practitioners and populations all over the world are successfully using these herbs to boost immune health. By adding these five herbs to your diet during flu season, or simply when you need a little immunity boost, you’ll be giving your system the help it needs!
