Over the last few decades, hip surgeries have become incredibly common, and can greatly improve a patient’s quality of life. If you are planning on having this procedure carried out in the near future, then you need to come up with a comprehensive recovery plan so that you are back on your feet as quickly as possible.

Improve Your Overall Health

Spending a little bit of time improving your overall health is one of the best things that you can do going into a major procedure. Patients who make an attempt to boost their health before an operation will usually enjoy a much quicker and easier recovery. Some of your pre-op instructions might include getting plenty of rest every night, a daily workout routine, and sticking to a healthy diet.

Start Moving Around As Soon As Possible

While you will probably need to rest in bed for at least one full night, most patients can begin walking around the following day. Getting up and moving around is going to improve blood flow to the hips and limit your risk of a blood clot. That being said, you must be very careful during those first few days of your recovery if you want to avoid long-term tissue damage.

Pay Attention To Your Weight

Many doctors won’t even consider carrying out hip surgery if their patients are fully devoted to staying within a healthy weight range. Gaining weight after your procedure will greatly increase your risk of unnecessary complications and put quite a bit of strain on your hips. To stay at a healthy weight, you will need to keep a very close eye on your diet in the weeks following the surgery.

Don’t Skip Physical Therapy

After hip surgery, most doctors suggest setting up some type of physical therapy plan. If getting to a physical therapy office isn’t practical, then you might want to consider in home physical therapy. The goal of physical therapy is to improve your strength and balance while your hip heals. The physical therapist can also give you a long-term training plan so that you can continue to improve your health in the coming months.

In addition to these few tips, you should also do everything in your power to get to your follow-up appointments. During those checkups, your doctor will be able to double-check your overall health and make sure that your hips are healing properly.
