As we start to age, our hormones also begin changing. Hormones are the body’s messengers used to coordinate bodily functions. In most cases, aging causes our hormone functions to decline, which changes our appearance and physical health.
Luckily, regularly balancing our hormones can assist with age-related conditions. By making lifestyle changes to improve hormone functions, we can live healthier as we continue to age.
Balance Testosterone Levels
Over time, male testosterone levels typically drop as their estrogen levels decline, while women experience the opposite. This can cause the skin to have more wrinkles and even facial and body acne. For men, losing testosterone doesn't only cause erectile dysfunction, but also impacts overall wellness, including bone health and muscle mass.
A great way to improve testosterone levels is to adjust our lifestyle choices. For instance, if you are overweight, shedding between 7 to 10% of those pounds will help regulate this hormone. Eating a protein-rich diet in conjunction with lowering alcohol intake, exercising, and eliminating tobacco will result in balanced testosterone levels and better overall health. In more severe cases, medical centers can even create unique hormone replacement therapy options to assist you.
Regulating Menopausal Hormones
Menopause is a common condition for middle aged women. During menopause, women’s ovaries begin producing less estrogen and progesterone, causing the pituitary gland to produce excess FSH, or follicle stimulating hormone. Subsequent symptoms include hot flashes, vaginal dryness during intercourse, and even osteoporosis, raising the probability of bone fractures.
To remedy these symptoms, you can take an oral supplement with estrogen and progesterone, but not for extended periods of time. Extensive use causes side effects like irregular blood clotting, stroke, and even breast cancer. Plant-derived bioidentical therapy and maintaining a healthy diet is also recommended to alleviate these symptoms. If you suffer from painful intercourse, it's recommended to apply topical estrogen cream.
Balancing Thyroid Hormones
Thyroid condition symptoms, including regular mood and energy level changes, fluctuating weight, and trouble tolerating changes in temperature, are signs it may be time to get checked for a thyroid disorder. If diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, there are medical treatments, including oral synthetic thyroid hormones, available.
Hormonal changes are going to occur as we age. To keep them properly regulated, we must maintain healthy lifestyles, including proper diet and exercising, and taking proper medication when necessary. If problems persist, speak with a healthcare provider for further assistance.
