Growing up brings plenty of fun and exciting times to learn about yourself and experiment with activities you enjoy. While there are plenty of things you can do on your own with this newfound freedom, one aspect you must keep on top of is your health and well-being.

With this freedom comes increased responsibility and personal health can be a challenging area to hold yourself accountable. Below we’ll outline a few simple ways you can focus on your health after moving out from practicing self-care, being disciplined with a routine and regularly exercising!

Practice Regular Self-Care

Coming off a year like none other, self-care has become quite the buzz term, yet too many people lack in devoting time to it. Self-care can take on a number of different looks including physical, social, mental, spiritual and emotional, with specific ways to practice each. When moving out, and especially if you’re living alone, the mental aspect may be one of the most important aspects to hone in on.

Your mind is a tricky place and just like your muscles, it takes regular conditioning to improve. If you don’t already, work to practice daily crossword puzzles or spend 20 minutes before bed each night reading a book to break a mental sweat. Mental self-care can also take other forms such as journaling, meditating and a number of other techniques so find what’s best for you!

Find a Hygiene Routine That Works

Establishing a routine either in the morning, night, or both can help you set up your day for success and set the tone for the day to come. While you likely have a normal routine you follow in the morning such as making your bed to feel a sense of accomplishment and enjoying a cup of coffee, it’s important to take care of your hygiene as well.

In order to form a habit, your daily routine should include using the same, dependable hygiene products. From your vitamins to prescription medications, your haircare products and everything in between, the best results come from consistent usage.

For example, you may use a finasteride prescription to help you maintain a full head of hair. If you aren’t using the product per recommended dosage, you won’t see the results you’re looking for. The same can be said about any other daily medications, moisturizers, vitamins, and products that are part of an “adult” hygiene routine.

Your hygiene requires daily upkeep - staying diligent can help you look better and feel better among other benefits. Having a self-care checklist that you complete each morning can help you not only start the day off by accomplishing tasks, but it can also keep you disciplined and on top of your health.

Get Out and Move

We all know how important regular exercise is to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. However, after moving out and living on your own for the first time, it can be a difficult balance to strike. If going to the gym for an hour a day is too much, don’t worry, there are tons of at-home exercises you can accomplish right from your living room. While this may not be ideal, it’s an easy way to make sure you’re spiking your heart rate and staying active.

If you live near a park, or have outdoor space, do your best to get outside and breathe in some fresh air as well. Exercising outdoors exposes your body to vitamin D which can act as a natural antidepressant by raising serotonin levels on top of producing endorphins from exercise itself.

Adulting on your own can be challenging. Taking care of your health, however, is something you can’t let go of. Choosing the right ways to practice self-care, focusing on your hygiene and getting in some physical exercise can go a long way in helping you live a happy and fulfilled life as an adult!
