Our teeth are subjected to all sorts of trials and harsh conditions daily: fluctuating temperatures, the impact of acids, food stains, hard foods, and chewing forces all work together to put teeth through the ultimate test constantly.
Although enamel protects the teeth from most external influences, signs of wear gradually do appear on teeth, either as cracks, cavitation, and in the form of mobility. For teeth beyond repair, tooth extraction may be required, which means losing teeth is a very likely outcome - and learning how to avoid the circumstances is crucial. Healthy habits and methods promote good oral hygiene and dental health.
Listed below are six simple tips to help make your teeth stronger!
1. Diet and Nutrition
It’s been stressed numerous times that diet contributes directly and indirectly to dental health. Drinking water, eating fruits and vegetables, avoiding sticky candy and reducing the amount of sugar in your overall diet are all effective ways to keep teeth happy and cavity-free.
2. Brush and Floss your Teeth
The best way to ensure healthy teeth in the future is by keeping them strong now. Brushing two times a day, and flossing your teeth regularly, help control and remove plaque and bacteria responsible for damaging teeth and gums. Less plaque in the mouth means a reduced chance of cavities.
3. Bad Habits
Smoking, teeth grinding, using teeth to open bottles and any other dental trauma can damage teeth irreversibly, causing premature loss of tooth structure. Parafunctional habits - such as night-time teeth grinding (bruxism) - may need a fabricated appliance to protect the teeth; a dental expert can provide one.
4. Gums are Important
Gums are equally important and need to be taken care of, as they anchor teeth and support them. Hard brushing, incorrect flossing, poor oral hygiene and habits such as smoking all affect the gums and can cause them to recede or inflame. With damaged or infected gums even strong teeth will fail to function.
5. Regular Check-ups with Your Dentist
Prevention and early intervention are the gold standards for excellent and responsible dental care. It is recommended to visit your dental health expert twice a year - once a year is a minimum. Dentists can diagnose problems before they manifest or cause permanent extensive damage, and regular check-ups help you stay ahead of any dental problem.
Strong Teeth are Healthy Teeth
Teeth are harder than steel, and there is no equal replacement for our natural teeth. This means maintaining and strengthening our teeth through healthy habits and proper care should be a lifelong journey, one that comes with numerous benefits.
Teeth are more than just a smile, they help us chew and provide nutrition to our bodies - valuing them and their function will help our general health and overall wellbeing. Remember, there’s nothing like your own teeth so save them while you can!
