Weakened teeth occur when the enamel is worn or thin, and teeth do not have the support they require to stay solid and strong. This can be genetic or the result of diet affecting the teeth and thinning the enamel.

To correct this concern it is important to brush and floss twice daily, but not directly after foods that weaken the enamel such as wine, as it will brush away the enamel as well. It is also important to maintain dentist appointments regularly.

Vitamins and weak teeth

Some people simply have thinner enamel or weaker teeth. It can be genetic and common for an entire family to have strong teeth - or weaker teeth.

In these cases it can be caught early and treatment can begin in childhood. Vitamins, such as calcium, can help strengthen the teeth. It is also be beneficial to maintain a reduced sugar diet and avoid sugary drinks in particular to help protect your enamel.

Cavities and weak teeth

Enamel can be worn away by food choices, drinks, and poor brushing habits. Sugar and other food remain on the teeth after eating and wear away at the enamel. Coffee, wine, sugary sodas, and sticky foods are particularly hard on teeth, and when enamel wears away the teeth develop cavities.

Large cavities may result in broken teeth and, if not addressed, may even lead to root canals or lost teeth. By choosing foods that are low in sugar and damaging properties but high in vitamins and minerals the strength of teeth may be protected and even boosted.

When a food such as wine weakens the enamel it may be damaging to brush directly afterward because the weakened enamel may be brushed away before it has hardened again. This will make teeth even weaker and may lead to cavities.

Proper brushing and weak teeth

Where weakened teeth are present it is important to use a proper brushing technique. You should also choose foods that are safe for teeth and that have vitamins and nutrients that encourage healthy growth of teeth and enamel.

While not all teeth are as strong as others they can often be protected and even repaired with good dental hygiene, food choices, decreased sugar in food and drinks, and increased brushing and flossing. With proper care and attention even weakened teeth can last years and be built up to be stronger and last longer.
