Taking care of your oral health has benefits that range from lowering your risk of heart disease to improving your self-confidence. Yet, it is easy to forget some of the best strategies over time. Or, you might have slacked off on your oral hygiene routine while you were dealing with a stressful life change.
Whatever the situation may be, you’ve got the chance to get back on track by using these oral health tips that are beneficial for people from all types of backgrounds.
Many people do okay with remembering to brush their teeth. However, you should be brushing for a full two to three minutes to fully wash away any tartar and food debris.
If you tend to rush through your routine, then set an alarm to let you know when you’ve finished brushing your teeth. Playing a song is another effective strategy since many of the best ones fall within this time frame.
Losing a tooth in the back of your mouth might seem like no big deal. However, teeth help you eat your food, and it prevents the other teeth from shifting out of place. Dental implants make tooth replacement easier, and they’ll stimulate your jawbone so that you are less likely to lose other teeth.
Dentists often hear their patients complain that flossing is hard or too time-consuming. Fortunately, you have more options for cleaning between your teeth and at the gum line than just the traditional string floss. You can also use water flossers or special pre-loaded ones that reduce the strain on your hands and make it easier to reach tight spaces in your mouth.
That jumbo-sized soda that you buy at the gas station might be doing more harm than adding calories to your diet. Sipping on sugary beverages all day long exposes your teeth to a constant onslaught of acids that break down the enamel.
The same is also true of food - and sour candies are the worst. If you want an acidic snack or drink, then consume it within an appropriate time frame. Then, rinse your mouth with water to neutralize the acids.
If you often forget to brush your teeth, then consider setting a reminder alarm at a preferred time. You can also use your calendar app to remind yourself to schedule your next dental appointment. Making sure that your oral hygiene routine is foolproof helps you to take care of your teeth and love having the opportunity to smile.

]]>As COVID is still prevalent around the world many places are continuing mask requirements and causing some changes to daily lives. One of those changes is the increased number of people noticing they are developing bad breath while wearing their mask. This occurs for a few reasons, and there are steps that can be taken to decrease this problem.
Bad breath that occurs with mask wearing can be attributed to two main factors. One is that with a mask people are simply more aware of their own breath and it may not have changed from pre-mask.
Another factor is the reduced amount of water that is being consumed as masks cannot be removed in some settings limiting the times and places that water can be consumed. To combat these, here are some simple steps you can follow.
To improve bad breath brush and floss teeth twice daily. It is important to remove all food particles and debris as they are often the cause of bad breath. Mouthwash is also beneficial in boosting fresh breath and helping it stay fresh longer, whether it is a liquid mouthwash or a breath-freshening gum or strip that can be used periodically throughout the day.
Dry mouth is frequently caused by not drinking enough water throughout the day. Once the mouth becomes dry it is unable to rinse away buildup and debris from food. To combat this it is important to take water breaks throughout the day. Setting a reminder can be helpful.
The average adult needs two to three liters of water every day and using a set water bottle or water cup with straw can help to track the amount of water.
It is still important to attend regular dental appointments to ensure any dental concerns are cared for and that your teeth are remaining healthy even while wearing a mask. By consuming foods that are mild in odor, brushing and flossing after each meal, and increasing the water intake, bad breath can be banished for good even under your COVID mask.

]]>Once our natural teeth are damaged or extracted there isn’t a way to undo the damage that has been done. There are ways to protect them though.
Some repairs can be made, or even replaced, with false teeth when necessary, but all of these come with a cost and varying levels of discomfort. These include saving the natural teeth and keeping them in place or replacing a tooth that is beyond repair.
To save your own natural teeth it is important to attend regular dental appointments for both preventative care and early intervention as needed, brush and floss teeth twice a day to remove residue that damages teeth and to keep them clean and protected, and avoid foods that are more likely to damage teeth.
Preventative dental care is key in maintaining the health of your teeth and to increase their lifespan. During preventative care appointments the dental hygienist will use the right tools to remove all plaque, tartar, and other residue from all tooth surfaces, including between teeth and under the gumline where needed.
This also allows the dental hygienist and the dentist to check each tooth for weakening spots in the enamel, signs of wear, and to find any cavities while they are small and less risky for the entire tooth.
By filling small cavities before they become larger, the integrity of the tooth is better maintained and the process is both faster and less uncomfortable, with less pain than a large filling would be.
Continuing the preventative care at home is important, as you only see your dentist a few times a year, but you are able to protect your teeth each morning and every night. By flossing between and around all the teeth the buildup that causes plaque and then tartar can be removed and cavities can be avoided.
Flossing the teeth first loosens buildup and debris from around the teeth and makes it easier to brush. Brushing should be done twice a day at minimum to remove buildup and prevent cavities by removing the residue that damages enamel as well as reducing the plaque build-up on teeth.
These simple actions can be done in a way to suit your schedule making tooth care viable for everyone.
While you are maintaining clean teeth and ensuring all residue is removed and sugar levels are decreased, choosing foods that are beneficial for teeth - milk, cheese, other dairy, proteins - will help provide the nutrients that teeth need. Avoid hard foods such as unshelled nuts and hard candies to help teeth to stay strong and avoid damage longer.
To protect and save your natural teeth it is important to make food choices and dental care that will protect them. By keeping them clean and residue free, and completing the minor repairs as needed, your natural teeth can last several decades.

]]>Cavities are among the most common yet most untreated oral health concerns. According to the CDC.gov, cavities occur in over 57 percent of those aged 12 to 19. Among adults, about 90 percent or one in four adults have at least one cavity. If left unattended, cavities can become painful and create potential openings for dangerous infection and germs.
While most people associate the formation of cavities with poor dental hygiene, they can be caused by diseases, too. Thus, in some cases, having a cavity may be a sign that there is something else amiss. Though everyone’s dental health is unique to their lifestyle and health, here are some health conditions which generally cause cavities:
1. Acid Reflux
Acid reflux, also called heartburn, is described as an uncomfortable burning sensation caused by stomach acids. Often associated with eating too quickly or too much, acid reflux can happen intermittently and frequently.
If you’re experiencing the latter, you may find that you’re beginning to experience cavities or dental erosion. This is because over time the stomach acids significantly wear down tooth enamel. This protective layer is what prevents cavities, sensitivities, and discoloration. In some people, persistent acid reflux can even cause teeth to decay faster.
2. Rheumatoid Arthritis
Although the connection between your joints and your teeth may not be obvious, their well-being is tied together. As explained by Medline, because rheumatoid arthritis chronically inflames the joints, it becomes very difficult to complete many tasks. This includes brushing your teeth or flossing, which are critical to cavity prevention.
Since some people with rheumatoid arthritis also suffer from stiffness in their jaw, this makes it even harder to keep up with dental hygiene. Interestingly, researchers have found that germs responsible for swollen gums may also trigger rheumatoid arthritis.
3. Lupus
As an autoimmune disease, lupus makes it easier for germs to penetrate the body. With lupus, this means that those diagnosed with this are more likely to have gum disease, cavities, and chronic ulcers and lesions.
Since lupus also affects the saliva glands, cavities can occur as the tooth enamel erodes away. Because lupus is notoriously hard to diagnose, cavities associated with this disease are often incorrectly attributed to something else.
4. Diabetes
Diabetes is one of the most common chronic health conditions globally. A report from the WHO even reveals that diabetes incidents have risen by 314 million cases worldwide. Because diabetes makes one prone to infections, it is also considered a viable cause for other conditions including heart disease, kidney failure, and cavities.
Specifically, diabetes is said to cause lesions and thrush because of higher sugar levels in saliva. As mentioned earlier, these can encourage germs to multiply drastically. Eventually, this can cause the tooth to erode painfully.
5. Anemia
Those diagnosed with anemia experience a lack of iron in the body. For your teeth, this means that they are more likely to become weak and prone to germ penetration.
As such, those with iron deficiency anemia have been reported to have abnormally pale mouth tissue, inflamed tongues, and gum disease. Because anemia also makes it harder for the body to distribute nutrients, your teeth may not be receiving the vitamins and minerals they need to prevent cavities like calcium.
Should you find that you have cavities, though, don’t immediately assume you have a disease. Instead, try upgrading your dental hygiene first. Some healthy practices that Harry Lloyd discussed here before include lowering your sugary intake, frequently visiting your dentist, and regular brushing, flossing and rinsing with mouthwash.
With this, you can seriously reduce your chances of cavities getting bigger or developing at all. Should your cavities be a regular issue, though, it doesn’t hurt to get professional help. With expert guidance, you can nip those cavities - and any potential health condition - as early as possible.

]]>Like any other body part, your teeth require regular cleanings. Dental cleaning is a routine performed by a dental hygienist where your entire mouth is examined and plaque and tartar removed with the guidance of a small mirror.
There are four types of dental cleaning: prophylaxis dental cleaning, scaling and root planing cleaning, periodontal maintenance cleaning, and gross debridement cleaning - all equally important. It is important that you get regular dental cleanings because of the following reasons.
Plaque in your teeth decays to form an acid that erodes the enamel causing tooth decay. The erosion continues until cavities (holes) are formed on your teeth that cause more significant damage. Brushing is not enough to remove all plaque from your teeth and you are required to get dental cleanings to prevent decay and cavities.
Regular dental cleaning prevents this common oral affliction. Periodontitis is an infection that damages the gum's soft tissues and can destroy the bone that holds your teeth. It also leads to bleeding and causes bad breath. Dental cleaning, as well as proper brushing and flossing, avoids these infections.
Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is caused by odor-producing germs in your mouth and can really affect your social life. It can also be caused by poor oral hygiene, some health conditions and some foods. Dental cleaning helps prevent or clear the problem and leaves your mouth with a fresher taste.
Oral cancer usually appears as a sore or growth in your mouth that won't go away. At the end of teeth cleaning, the dentists always look for any potential oral cancer signs, which helps in the early detection of cancer. Early detection is crucial in fighting cancer, making regular dental cleaning essential.
Dental cleaning enables your dentist to look for any damages on your teeth and fix them, leaving your mouth healthier. This is also the perfect time to remove any stains on your teeth.
A beautiful smile boosts your appearance and to maintain it, you must take preventative dental care. It is recommended you schedule a thorough professional dental cleaning appointment at least twice a year. This will go a long way in improving your oral health.

]]>Being a teenager can be difficult. You have school, homework, extracurricular activities, social and family obligations, and you may even have an after-school job. Trying to balance everything can cause you to feel burnt-out, overwhelmed, or stressed.
Self-care is a fancy term for taking care of your physical and mental health by meeting your basic needs. Here are some self-care tips to help you maintain a better balance among your various daily obligations.
If "adequate sleep" isn't listed as one of the 7 habits of highly effective teens, it should be. When you are awake, toxins build up in your brain, and sleep gives it an opportunity to clean out those toxins. A lack of sleep can also make you feel more anxious when you are awake.
It's easy to forgo sleep when you are studying for a big test or hanging out with friends. However, when you are tired, it affects your thinking and judgment. Therefore, if you stay up late studying, you may not be able to perform as well on the test the next day, and if you are hanging out with friends, you may make risky decisions.
Therefore, getting enough sleep, which for teens is between eight and 10 hours, should be a priority.
Food is the fuel that your body needs to function. If you have ever run out of gas when you were driving, you know the way that your car can run down when it is low on fuel. The same thing can happen to your body.
A lack of nutrition can also affect your mental health. Your brain uses 20% of the energy you get from the food you eat. It also uses nutrients from the food you eat to produce serotonin, which is a chemical that helps to regulate your moods. If you do not get the proper nutrition, it could have a negative effect on your mental health.
Exercise helps your body to metabolize food more efficiently so it doesn't have to be stored in the body as fat. It decreases your risk of developing chronic diseases when you are older. Exercise may help academic performance by increasing confidence and concentration.
It can help to improve your mental health by simulating a fight-or-flight response, which sends a message to your brain to calm you down, and by releasing endorphins, a brain chemical that helps you relax.
Most young people do not do enough physical activity. You should do between 30 to 60 minutes of vigorous exercise every day. One way to accomplish this is to join a sports team, but there are plenty of other ways to get exercise by yourself or with a friend.
Riding a bike, walking the dog, dancing, swimming, and at-home aerobics are all examples of activities you can do to get exercise. Choose the one that you think you will enjoy the most or rotate between several to keep it interesting. Schedule a time for exercise on a daily basis and be accountable to someone for doing it.
If you don't take care of your teeth now, you may require extensive dental work when you are older, such as crowns and root canals. An infected tooth could form an abscess and spread germs to other areas of your body. If there is no other treatment for your tooth decay, there may be no alternative except to extract the tooth.
Extractions and other procedures don't hurt much when they are happening because the dentist gives you anesthesia, but the recovery can be pretty uncomfortable. Keep this from happening to you by brushing your teeth at least twice a day, flossing between them at least once a day, and getting a checkup every six months or as often as your dentist recommends.
Many of these healthy habits have some bearing on one another. For example, good nutrition also helps to keep your teeth healthier.

]]>Just as there are foods that can increase the risk of cavities, residue on the teeth, and plaque buildup, there are some foods that improve dental health. These foods provide the nutrients that teeth need to maintain strong enamel, protect teeth and gums from infection, and help prevent germ growth that causes cavities.
In addition to good oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing twice daily and maintaining regular dental visits, diet and food choices can help improve dental health. Dairy such as cheese, yogurt, and milk are all healthy choices for dental health. These foods will counteract acid from other foods and neutralize the acidity within the mouth.
Removing the effects of acid on the enamel allow it to remain intact; the calcium found in these foods promote strong enamel and healthy teeth.
Calcium can help strengthen teeth and enamel, but for the body to absorb and use it efficiently, vitamin D is also required. Fish is a strong source of this vitamin and eating fish regularly can help improve the effects of calcium intake, as well as absorbing vitamin D from the sun’s rays.
Drinking plenty of water is an easy way to improve your oral health. If the body is not consuming enough water the body can become dehydrated, which reduces the formation of saliva and increases risk of cavities.
Water also helps rinse food from the mouth and keep the teeth free of debris, while rinsing away any sugary drinks or foods so they are unable to remain in contact with the teeth. This reduced contact with sugar, and improved levels of saliva, will protect the teeth from extra germs and infections.
By lowering the risk of gum infection and disease, the breath will remain better, teeth are less likely to form cavities, and both root canals and tooth extractions can be avoided.
Tea, either black tea or green tea, is beneficial for dental health. There are polyphenols present in tea of all types, and these specific nutrients fight the germs that cause plaque. By reducing the plaque causing germs there is a reduction in cavities and gum disease, and dental health is greatly improved.
Onions also have this effect on germs and can be consumed raw in meals or cooked. Even as a seasoning, onions will destroy some of the cavity-causing germs.
Vegetables that are high in water content and fiber can be beneficial for teeth and oral health. The increased time it takes to chew celery will increase the saliva within the mouth, which helps keep teeth clean, and the fiber and consistency of the celery will rub against the teeth removing buildup.
Dark chocolate also has ingredients and nutrients that can help to strengthen the enamel on the teeth. While large amounts of chocolate can have the opposite effect due to the high sugar content that is found in many types of chocolate, a few pieces of dark chocolate can be beneficial for tooth health.

]]>Dental implants have been around for decades, but they’re becoming more popular in recent years. The main reason is because of the benefits that dental implants offer. They allow you to eat and speak normally, take medications, and enjoy a healthy smile after your surgery.
However, they don’t just help you live a better quality of life - they can also save your life. Here are four ways dental implants can improve your quality of life.
Dental implants boost your self-esteem by giving you a healthy mouth that looks great. Just think about how good it feels when you look at yourself in the mirror with beautiful teeth! Plus, your smile makes people want to talk to you and get to know you better.
It could be hard to find someone who doesn’t like having their picture taken, but if you’ve got a gorgeous smile, every now and then you might just find yourself surrounded by eager subjects.
After all, we all need food to survive, but chewing through some fake gum isn’t going to cut it. So what if you use dentures or bridges? They’ll always leave something out. With dental implants, you won’t worry about missing anything important ever again - you’ll be able to eat comfortably without feeling stressed.
Also, speaking will become much easier since the implant has integrated into your jawbone. There’s no longer an uneven gap between your tooth and your palate.
The bone loss caused by periodontal disease causes serious problems. When patients lose a significant amount of height, there’s a larger chance of complications occurring. What’s worse is that as soon as the bones start to deteriorate it’s almost impossible to repair them even though losing bone mass is the body’s natural way of healing itself.
This is especially prevalent among older adults. If you’re 50 or above, you should consider getting dental implants. Fortunately, this process only takes three months; otherwise, it would require six months of recovery time. Nowadays, a high percentage of people choose this option over dentures for its faster recovery rate and superior results.
Many people assume that choosing dental implants means higher costs when looking at traditional options, but not necessarily. There are various methods you can use to make implants cheaper than using dentures or bridges.
For example, you can opt to have smaller crowns instead of large ones. Since small implants are less visible, your dentist may be more willing to accept a lesser appearance to reduce your expenses.
In addition, dental implants are stronger than normal teeth. This increases the lifespan of each implant, which ultimately saves you money on replacement procedures. All in all, it’s easy to see why dental implants are the “go-to solution.”
Dental implants are worth considering if you want to keep eating and speaking normally - which is extremely necessary! Not only do these devices boost your self-esteem, but they prevent problems from developing down the road.
After a thorough consultation with your dentist or oral surgeon, you can determine whether dental implants are right for you. Even if you don’t end up undergoing the procedure, make sure to ask questions about possible alternatives. In the end, dental implants give you an opportunity to achieve healthier teeth and a happier life overall.

]]>Brushing teeth is one of the best ways to maintain the health of your teeth, but many people are not doing it in the way that provides the best results. Brushing teeth at the correct angle can allow the toothbrush to reach all areas of the tooth and clean along the gums.
When learning to brush, people often do not learn that brushing at a 45-degree angle to the teeth will provide the best results. This angle allows the bristles to reach not only to the gumline but can often reach underneath the gumlines to remove buildup there as well.
This offers the most effective brushing technique and prevents the formation of plaque and tartar.
When sugar, food particles and residue from drinks buildup on the teeth, it allows for germs to live and begin to grow and multiply. Brushing and flossing the teeth removes this buildup before it hardens, and this can prevent cavities and tooth decay as well as gum disease.
Where the germs and plaque come in contact with the gums they can cause the germs to continue growing and form gum disease.
At dental cleanings a tool is used for scaling the teeth, which removes all hardened buildup as well as the plaque that forms, and leaves teeth clean and polished. After each cleaning appointment, follow-up care is needed to keep the teeth clean and free of buildup.
As plaque cannot be removed through cleaning at home, it is important to continue to attend regular dental appointments even when brushing and flossing well at home.
A toothbrush cleans the teeth by brushing away any food particles and residue that is present after eating or drinking. Bristles on the brush sweep away the germs and clean the teeth.
By placing the toothbrush against the teeth at an angle of 45 degrees, the bristles come in contact with more of the tooth surface and remove more residue with each brush.
That angle of 45 degrees allows the toothbrush bristles to reach the gumline of the teeth, and to brush right against the gums, to reach under the gums to remove buildup and can also brush the gums themselves.
By brushing under the gums, cavities that begin along the gumline are reduced. Brushing the gums keeps them clean of residue and buildup, as well as encourages circulation within the gums to keep gums healthy. This not only protects the teeth but also prevents gum disease that can cause other health concerns as well.
While brushing the teeth for two minutes twice each day will reduce the cavities and remove buildup and germs from the teeth, doing so at the correct angle will improve oral health. It allows for improved teeth and gum cleaning as well as reduces the germs in the mouth.

]]>Your health is one of your most valuable assets and often can be one that is hard to manage. Because of its complexity, it is not always easy to know how to support a healthy body. It can often feel like a shot in the dark.
If you are tired of throwing everything at the wall when it comes to your health, you need to understand that there are a few strategies that you need to try. While there are several ways that you can approach your health, here are six strategies that can make a sizable difference in your well-being in this upcoming year.
Take a Deeper Dive Into Your Health
Many adults understand that their health is a complicated system; however, all too many adults are only taking a shallow dive into their wellness. While focusing on diet and exercise are important, you also need to dive a bit deeper.
Understanding everything from your family history to potential health risks to your thyroid health will be key factors in your health. This valuable information will be key to supporting your body and its complex systems.
Visit Your Doctor Regularly
While you need to develop a clear understanding of your wellness, you also need to continue to consult your doctor. Their expertise paired with your knowledge of your body and its functioning can play an influential role in the state of your body.
This will establish a baseline for your health. Should you run into more serious health issues, you’ll have someone that you trust to identify the problem and address it. If you don’t have this relationship, your body can suffer serious consequences.
Schedule a Teeth Cleaning and Dental Checkup
Your general doctor is not the only health professional that you need to see regularly. You also need to visit a dentist. When it comes to living a healthy life, your mouth will play a vital role.
Not only can tooth decay cause physical changes and painful effects, but it can also lead to health issues down the line. Proper oral care and regular visits to the dentist can help your body be in tip-top shape.
Assess Your Sleep
One of the most common issues among adults is insufficient sleep. Whether you suffer from poor sleep quality or skimp on your quantity, poor sleep has a catastrophic impact on your body. Not getting enough sleep or high enough quality can lead to an increased risk of heart disease, mental health disturbances and many other costly health conditions.
This can also lead to side effects like irregular eating behaviors, fatigue and moodiness in the short term. If you want your body to be in better shape this year, you need to invest in better sleep.
Drink More Water
Another common problem among adults is dehydration. Many adults drink too much coffee or too many sugary drinks in place of water, leaving their bodies drained and dehydrated. If you want to boost your health, you need to drink enough water.
Most adults require between two and three liters of water per day. Having enough water can help you regulate your appetite, feel more alert and improve your energy and mood.
Invest in Stress Relief
While stress may appear to be more of a mental and emotional factor, stress has a way of showing up in your body. Whether it appears as constant muscle tension, inability to sleep, elevated blood pressure, stomach issues or visible agitation, that tension can have physical effects.
Not to mention that stress can compound and trigger cycles. To improve your body and your well-being, make sure that you find ways to release that pressure. Investing in your stress management can do wonderful things for your body and your mind.
This is your year to invest in yourself. Don’t spend another moment letting your body down by putting your wellness to the wayside. Instead, take these tips and live your best year yet.

]]>Engaging in sporting activities is essential to human life. Apart from the physical fitness and health benefits, sports also teach us valuable life lessons such as teamwork, discipline, focus, and endurance.
Regardless of the kind of sport you participate in, you can’t rule out the possibilities of injuries taking place. According to the American Dental Assistants Association, one of the most common sports-related injuries occurs in the mouth. In this article, we shall discuss the best ways to take care of your teeth in case you sustain an injury during sports.
Depending on the severity of the teeth injury, bleeding of the gums can sometimes occur. Therefore, you should rinse your mouth using hydrogen peroxide as a first-aid measure. The hydrogen peroxide will protect your mouth from developing infections as a disinfectant.
Also, it will help stop bleeding sustained from bruises and prevent gum inflammation. Note that hydrogen peroxide solution is harmful if swallowed.
If your gum tissues are bruised from the sports injury, then applying pressure using a cold gauze, folded towel, or any other suitable cloth will help prevent swelling. Also, a cold compress along the gum line will restrict the flow of blood to the affected area.
This practice can significantly reduce bleeding. Preferably, you should consider applying a cold press frequently throughout the day.
More often, toothaches can be caused by fractured or cracked teeth from sports injuries. Or it could be that your nerve endings are affected in one way or the other. Therefore, if you feel a dull, sharp, or throbbing pain in your teeth, you can consider taking anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
Depending on the injury sustained in the mouth, selecting what you eat is probably a good idea. There are foods that will further affect your injury. For instance, you should avoid taking hard-to-chew foods or carbonated beverages.
If you want to aid faster healing, think of soft foods such as soup, black tea, and yogurt. Also, foods rich in vitamins C and K will improve your immunity and facilitate blood clots, respectively.
If, after practicing proper dental hygiene and observing other relevant measures, you still notice pain worsening, then you should visit your dentist right away.
Look for a dentist who is always ready to offer you quality dental checkups and treatment - whether your teeth get weakened, cracked, gums bruised, or you want to seek assistance as soon as possible.
For example, if your teeth have sustained too much damage, they may benefit from getting crowns added. Dental crowns can help treat teeth before the damage becomes too serious to repair. Do not hesitate to visit an expert as soon as possible.
Dental injuries are one common form of sports injury that you can’t avoid. Whether it’s your lips, gums, teeth, or tongue that is damaged, it’s important that you seek proper treatment on time. The above-mentioned are the top ways you can practice to facilitate faster healing and recovery.

]]>Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are surgically inserted into the jawbone and then anchored in place permanently. The implants provide a foundation for replacement teeth or dentures and function as anchors of the real teeth to keep them securely rooted in the jaw.
Dental implants have been in use since the 1960s, but due to improving technology over the past few years, the success rates have skyrocketed. Currently, some 10 million people worldwide have dental implants and an additional two million are treated each year.
The difference between 20 years ago and today is that a dental implant at that time had a 50 percent survival rate after five years, while today it's 90 percent.
Dental implants are the closest replacement for a real tooth root that can be achieved. Dental implants act like natural teeth and to a high degree, can perform the same functions.
For example, if you have lost a tooth in the upper jaw, your dentist may be able to provide a dental bridge or denture in its place. A bridge is fixed between two adjacent teeth and is not very stable.
A denture is supported by a row of teeth in the lower jaw leaving an unnatural wide gap. As time goes by, these gaps can widen to the point where not only your smile looks different but your jawbone starts to shift and collapse causing facial sagging and the shape of your face to change. A dental implant will allow you to have a more natural-looking smile and will restore that missing tooth or teeth giving you back your self-confidence.
Dental implants are the most successful dental restoration in history with very high survival rates. Each year more than one million dental implants are placed worldwide with a success rate of between 95 and 99 percent.
Dental implants are a very cost-effective and long-term investment in your oral health. Depending on the number of teeth involved, the cost varies. This may sound very expensive, but it's important to remember that the cost can be spread over 10 years through various financing options.
It's very important to factor in the time saved by not having to go back for periodic check-ups maintaining conventional dentures. Are you looking for professional dental implant services? Visit a local dentist, like Total Freedom Dental Implant Center to get your wonderful smile back.

]]>There are pros and cons for chewing gum with no real determination if it is good or bad for your teeth and health. There are some health benefits from chewing gum, but there are also some health factors that gum can worsen or cause. To decide if it is a good choice for you, it is important to consider all the aspects.
The benefits of chewing gum include appetite suppression to avoid eating something sweet. By reducing sugar intake the teeth are less prone to cavities and damage. Other benefits of decreasing sugar intake include better control over health concerns, weight loss, and replacing those foods with healthier ones.
Some studies have even shown that chewing gum boosts the metabolic rate and can assist in burning increased calories throughout the day.
Chewing gum increases the saliva production which aids in reducing residue on teeth and helps keep teeth and gums free of food particles and germs. Gum with xylitol has been shown to reduce the growth of germs within the mouth by up to 75 percent.
By aiding in avoiding dry mouth it can help reduce cavities. Sugar-free gum can aid in quitting other bad habits and has been shown to help people quit smoking, by providing a distraction from the habit.
Studies have shown that chewing gum can offer something to focus on that eases nerves and helps fight effects of stress on the body - a stress reliever much like a stress ball or other activities.
While chewing gum some brain functions may be increased including short and long-term memory, decision making, and alertness. Studies have discovered that students show fewer signs of stress, and that the memory boost can help with studying. Chewing gum is also related to the production or cortisol, reducing the stress felt by the body.
Some of the risks that occur when chewing gum include TMD, where the jaw becomes sore and can affect the jaw joint. There have also been links discovered between chewing gum and an increase in headaches. Those who suffer from regular headaches or migraines may want to avoid chewing gum too often if it causes headaches for them.
Chewing gum also has several health benefits, but as with many other things there are some risks that occur and the chance it can make some things worse.
It may help to protect teeth from cavities and help to rinse away food and sugar particles after eating, as well as decreasing dry mouth, however, it may cause increased headaches or pain in the muscles and joints in the jaw.
When used in moderation it can be a great way to increase saliva and freshen breath after meals.

]]>Did you know that your dentist can prescribe antibiotics? They won’t always do so, but if you have an infected tooth or need a root canal, your dentist will likely insist on giving you dental antibiotics.
If you have a severe infection or it has spread, or you have weakened immunity, you will get antibiotics from your dentist. The type they will use will depend on the type of germs that has caused your infection. Antibiotics that come from the penicillin class are the most commonly prescribed.
Another antibiotic, metronidazole, may also be given. Your dentist may even prescribe it with penicillin to ensure all the germ species are eradicated. While these are common for tooth infections, if you are allergic, you must let your dentist know so that they can use something else.
Should your dentist report that you have a tooth infection and need antibiotics, you will likely need to take them for a week. Your dentist will go over how frequently to take it and how much to take per dose. Additionally, the pharmacist will go over further details.
It’s important to keep taking any prescribed antibiotics as instructed. It takes them time to work, plus even when you feel better and have medication leftover, you should still take it. Just because your symptoms disappear doesn’t mean that you’ve gotten rid of all the germs. Finish the entire prescription first.
If you feel the kind of dental pain associated with an infected tooth, you’ll want to visit your dentist right away. It’s fairly obvious with throbbing pain in your tooth that will radiate through your entire jaw. You’ll likely have a fever too.
You will need a prescription for antibiotics from your dentist, but until you can get there to get checked out, you can take Tylenol or other OTC pain relievers. To help ease things in the mouth, you can gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water.
A key telltale sign of infection is sensitivity to hot or cold foods and trouble chewing. You should watch food and beverage temperatures and try to chew on the other side of your mouth.
The dangers of having an oral infection spread are very real, so don’t take a chance. It can spread to your brain which is far worse than having to see your dentist. You can also prevent this from arising by simply caring for your teeth as instructed by your dentist and making sure to have your dental exam every six months.
When it comes to dental antibiotics, not everyone will need them but when you do, be sure to take them as directed until they’re gone to ensure the infection is gone too!

]]>Maintaining healthy teeth and gums is about more than just proper brushing and flossing. Everyday lifestyle choices can have a significant impact on your oral health, regardless of how often you clean your teeth.
Choosing a healthy diet and eating the right foods is especially important, as the right nutrients can help strengthen your teeth and fight inflammation. However, some foods can be harmful, especially when consumed in large amounts or on a regular basis. Many dentists recommend specific foods based on a patient's unique situation.
Many natural foods are good for your teeth and gums, but a few are especially beneficial for good oral health. Dairy products are rich in calcium and phosphorus, some of the main building blocks of tooth structure. Lean meats and dark leafy greens are also rich in these essential nutrients and can help strengthen your teeth and bones.
When it comes to keeping your gums healthy, minimizing inflammation is key. Foods that are high in antioxidants, such as berries, garlic, kale, and dark chocolate, are known for their anti-inflammatory properties.
Dealing with sensitive teeth is a relatively common issue, which is why it's such a popular topic in dental SEO articles across the internet. A study by the Journal of the American Dental Association showed that as many as 12 percent of adults have teeth sensitivities that are unrelated to other issues.
This doesn't include sensitivity caused by recent dental work or other treatments.
Regardless of the cause, tooth sensitivities can be made worse by certain dietary choices, specifically eating foods and beverages that are:
Dentists recommend keeping the temperature lukewarm and limiting sugars and acids to reduce discomfort. In addition, it can be very helpful to switch to a desensitizing toothpaste.
Having your teeth whitened is a great way to improve your smile, but you could ruin the results quickly by eating the wrong foods. Most dentists recommend a white or clear food diet for at least 48 hours after treatment while the enamel is still more prone to new stains.
In general, if you want to keep your teeth looking white and bright, avoid coffee, red wine, artificial food dyes, and tobacco use.
For some dental patients, genetics just isn't on their side when it comes to tooth decay. Even with great brushing habits and good routine care, you could still be more prone to cavities than others. For these patients, dentists recommend seriously controlling their sugar intake.
Sugary drinks can be especially harmful, along with sticky candy, gummies, and treats. If you really want something sweet, many dental professionals recommend a milk chocolate bar over most other options; this is more easily broken down and removed by your saliva.
If you've had a recent dental procedure, you may be dealing with pain and swelling for a few days. It's a good idea to stick with a soft food diet for the first few days of recovery. Try to choose options that still have some nutritional value and a decent amount of protein. Some healthy options include:
After the initial recovery period, you should be able to gradually reintroduce other foods back into your diet. Some dental work may be prone to damage, so your dentist may recommend avoiding foods that are extremely hard, tough, crunchy, or chewy; these choices could lead to chips and breaks or could loosen the bond, resulting in more dental work.
It is important to talk to your dentist about any dietary concerns or questions you may have. They can make recommendations based on your unique situation. Choosing the right foods can help you enjoy a healthier mouth while experiencing less pain and discomfort, especially after a dental procedure.

Photo by lafayett zapata montero on Unsplash]]>Green tea has many health benefits when consumed regularly. Research has discovered that these benefits also extend to dental health. By lowering the oral germs levels within the mouth, it encourages healthy teeth and gums which can extend to improvements throughout the body.
One of the benefits of green tea is that it reduces the level of acidity in the saliva. The decreased acidity lowers the formation of cavities, and slows gum disease. It also shows promise in slowing the rate of tooth decay. A study based in Egypt showed that rinsing the teeth for five minutes with green tea slowed gum bleeding.
Choosing to end a meal with green tea can reduce cavities and gum disease, or even rinse the mouth after meals. Increased consumption of green tea will also increase the caffeine in the body so should be limited to a cup or two each day.
With its anti-inflammatory abilities green tea also reduces inflammation in the gums and can improve periodontal disease while boosting the health of the gums. With reduced swelling and inflammation gums are less irritated, have less bleeding and are healthier.
This can be achieved through chewing gum or a candy with green tea extracts after each meal. These improvements to dental health are also likely to lead to fewer lost teeth and tooth extractions.
The increased antioxidants that green tea adds to the mouth may be able to slow oral cancer and even reduce the occurrence rates. Using a green tea extract in mints or gum after each meal can increase the protection of the cells from cancers.
When used by those with precancerous lesions it slowed the progress of oral cancer and inhibited the growth of oral cancers.
By decreasing the acidity and the germs in the mouth, there is an added benefit of reducing the microbes within the mouth. By killing the germs and microbes that cause bad breath to occur, not only is there a lower risk of tooth decay but also a lower risk of the bad breath that occurs when dental problems arise.
Green tea benefits can be enjoyed in many ways. It is achieved through drinking a cup or two of green tea each day, which will also contain enough caffeine to replace a coffee habit, or through other means.
Hard candies can be found that are sugar free and can be enjoyed after each meal, or dental care products that contain green tea and its extracts such as toothpaste and mouthwash.
These items are often found in healthfood stores and some grocery stores. Regular use can improve all aspects of dental health from lowering tooth decay, decreasing signs of gum disease such as bleeding and inflammation of the gums, while also slowing the progress and growth of oral cancer.

]]>Gingivitis is a common disease that affects the gums around your teeth and is caused by excessive buildup of plaque. Symptoms of gingivitis include inflammation of the gums, which brings pain and swelling to the area. If not treated properly, gingivitis could lead to more serious periodontal disease.
Treatment of gingivitis involves many of the same methods that are used to prevent the disease in the first place, and thankfully, with proper oral hygiene, you can easily protect yourself from getting this illness. Check out these five simple ways of preventing gingivitis.
1. Brush Your Teeth Daily
Protecting yourself from gum disease and other mouth illnesses comes down to practicing proper oral hygiene. The best way to treat your teeth is to brush them at least twice a day. Be sure to brush thoroughly and use the proper technique to cover every tooth, including the ones that are difficult to reach.
Using the best toothpaste for your teeth is important as well, as not all toothpastes are right for everyone. An electric toothbrush can help reach every crevice. Whether you use a standard or electric toothbrush, make sure to replace the brush or the brush head every three months or so.
The brushes should be replaced regularly since germs can build up in the bristles, and the bristles can also wear down and become less effective. Brushing your teeth at least twice daily, especially in the morning and before bed, is crucial to maintaining a healthy mouth.
Flossing your teeth is just as important as brushing them. Dental floss can get between your teeth in a way your toothbrush cannot, making it easier to get rid of plaque stuck in those tiny spaces.
When you brush your teeth before bedtime, pair it with thorough flossing to properly clean your mouth of everything that accumulated throughout the day. If you have trouble flossing in the back of your mouth, you can use a floss pick to reach in the back and floss every tooth. Be careful not to floss too hard, as being aggressive with it could hurt your gums.
After brushing and flossing, remove leftover germs in your mouth by rinsing thoroughly with mouthwash. Many different types of mouthwash are available, including ones with or without alcohol.
While mouthwash with alcohol does a thorough job of eliminating germs, it can feel quite harsh on the mouth and may be too painful to use for those with sensitive mouths. If you find mouthwash with alcohol is too harsh for you, ones with less or no alcohol are just as effective at cleaning your mouth and do not cause a burning sensation.
Having a healthy diet and lifestyle affects your oral health just as much as it affects your overall health. If you find your teeth are not as healthy as you would like them to be, then cutting back on your eating and lifestyle habits may be the key.
Try to eat fewer sugary and unhealthy foods such as candy and chips, as they can wear down your teeth and generate plaque. The types of drinks you consume, such as coffee, soda and alcoholic beverages, can also damage your teeth if you drink them in large quantities.
Smoking also contributes to bad oral health and disease, so if you smoke, try to quit if possible.
If you experience symptoms of gingivitis or are concerned about your oral health in general, make an appointment with your dentist. Schedule regular cleanings once or twice a year to ensure plaque buildup does not become a more serious problem in the future.
Keeping up with your oral health is important. By brushing and flossing regularly as well as making appointments with your dentist when you need a checkup or cleaning, you can maintain a healthy mouth and live without fear of gum disease.

]]>Swollen gums are likely to occur at some point due to the wide range of causes. There are several treatment options both at home and in a dental office. Often finding the right cause won’t change the suggested treatment so some options can begin at home as soon as swelling is noticed and can continue until the problem is corrected.
When the teeth or gums are irritated, infected, have food particles stuck around or between them or are dry, the gums can swell in response. To find the direct cause it may be necessary to see a dentist, but first check for anything that is around the teeth that shouldn’t be.
Flossing the teeth well can free many pieces of food or buildup from between the teeth and between the teeth and gums. Followed by a regular brushing this can solve swollen gums quickly and easily where that is the cause.
In other situations there may be a larger health concern present, such as infection, trauma to the area, or use of tobacco or alcohol. These can cause swelling in the gums and may affect the health of the teeth if left untreated.
To keep gums healthy and happy it is important to see a dentist when there is a trauma to the face, mouth, or teeth to ensure that there is no damage and ensure the gums are treated for any needs so they are able to surround the teeth as required and keep tooth loss minimal.
Infections will require antibiotic treatment to clear the infection and return gums to their healthy state.
When you discover swollen gums at home and are unable to locate the cause, it is important to see your dentist as soon as possible to rule out infection and gum disease. This will require medicated mouthwashes or other products to rid the infection and protect the teeth from damage.
To ease the discomfort and swelling while awaiting a dentist appointment, or when the case is mild and you know the cause, a saltwater rinse can be used. Add regular table salt to a cup of water and swish it around the mouth and between the teeth.
This can be done two or three times each day and can encourage gums to heal themselves as well as help draw out any infection that is beginning.
Some essential oils such as thyme, peppermint, and clove, and tea tree oil have been suggested to be diluted into a mouthwash to reduce swelling and inflammation in gums while also removing plaque from the teeth. Other options include using an aloe gel or a turmeric gel mixture to ease the inflammation of swollen gums.
When gums become swollen we may not know exactly what has caused it but we can begin to treat it and ease the discomfort that is felt. When gums are sore, chewing becomes difficult, and gums bleed or appear a different color than normal. Dental assistance should be found as soon as possible.

]]>Dental health is a critical aspect of your overall health. Therefore, neglecting your oral health can increase your risk of developing gum disease, respiratory problems, and heart disease, among other conditions. Good dental habits can have a lasting impact on your body. Below are four ways you can improve your oral health.
Keep your teeth clean by brushing twice a day, preferably in the morning and before bedtime. Brushing helps remove food particles left in your mouth after eating. Besides that, it prevents bad mouth odor and brightens the teeth.
Invest in a good toothbrush, one that does not have tough bristles to avoid hurting your gums and enamel. Instead, opt to use a toothbrush with soft bristles. Also, consider replacing your toothbrush every three to four months.
Ensure when you brush, you use toothpaste that provides a protective barrier for your teeth and prevents tooth decay. Brush gently for at least two or three minutes and pay attention to each tooth to avoid leaving plaque behind. Remember to brush your tongue to remove germs and food particles.
Flossing is an essential dental habit you shouldn't ignore. It aids in the removal of food particles stuck between your teeth. Flossing should be done once a day, and the best time to floss is right before going to bed. It helps remove food particles that accumulate during the day.
If you hate flossing, there are several alternatives to pick from, such as interdental brushes, pre-threaded floss, dental pick, and water flossing. On the other hand, if you have inflamed gums, sensitive gums, or dental work, a water pick is an ideal flossing option.
A nutritious diet comprising grains, proteins, fruits, and vegetables is ideal for anyone seeking to improve their oral health. These foods keep your teeth strong and prevent the development of cavities.
It is essential to limit your consumption of sugary foods as they contribute to the development of tooth decay. Such foods include candies, sodas, pastries, and desserts, to name a few.
Dental implants help maintain your oral health in many ways. They replace your missing teeth, keep your teeth from shifting, and encourage proper gum and bone interaction. ]]>Keeping teeth clean and healthy can be a challenging self-care task before even having braces, but it becomes even more imperative once you start your orthodontic journey. You are investing in your teeth and smile so it is extremely important that you take care of your teeth as best you can while wearing braces.
You might think that there's not much difference you need to do to your teeth once your braces are on, however you actually have to work a bit harder to maintain your mouth's cleanliness. The following reasons will help you understand why it is so important to keep your braces clean.
Our teeth tend to keep food and beverage particles trapped as is. Tiny spaces between our teeth and gums can harbor germs that can wreak havoc on our mouth. Once you throw in braces there are even more spaces for food to become trapped.
That's why it is so important to brush at least twice a day with safe natural toothpaste. Keeping up with your brushing schedule is just one critical step in keeping your teeth clean.
Sometimes a simple brushing isn't enough to dislodge any food particles. Softer foods such as starchy bread can be difficult to keep out of your braces. Although you should be avoiding troublesome foods like gum, candy, and popcorn, the reality is that sometimes mistakes happen.
That's when you need to have tools handy to keep your braces free and clear of food particles. Working around the wires can be tricky, but your orthodontist can supply you with special brushes and picks that are designed to keep your wires and brackets clean.
One key reason that you need to keep up with best oral hygiene practices while wearing braces is so that your teeth look perfect when you have your braces removed. If you don't stay on top of keeping them clean you could have unnecessary plaque and staining build up around where your brackets were.
You've spent so much time and energy getting your teeth nice and straight, so you don't want to miss out on a beautiful smile by forgetting to brush your teeth regularly. There are plenty of instances where patients neglected to stay on top of brushing and flossing and had unsightly marks and stains on their teeth after their braces were removed.
Do yourself a favor and brush often and finish off with using a plaque-fighting mouthwash each morning and evening.
You might not realize it, but your gums are going through quite a bit during the process of straightening your teeth. All that moving around can make your gums more sensitive and more susceptible to irritation in general.
Then when you add in that brushing and flossing is harder to do well, they can become even further irritated. Swollen and puffy gums are not something you want to deal with while wearing your braces.
The best way to keep your gums in their best condition is to floss regularly. It can be a pain since it is difficult to floss around braces but taking the time to do it properly will be worth the effort. Luckily flossing devices are made specifically to make it easier for people with braces.
There are traditional floss threaders that have a more pointed end to make it easier to get them around wires. There are also interesting plastic flossers that are designed to work just like traditional floss picks. One side is narrow and more pointed so that it can fit underneath the wire and reach up into the gum.
Keeping your mouth and teeth clean while wearing braces doesn't have to be overly difficult. If you keep the importance of cleaning your teeth in mind, you can easily put forth the extra effort to ensure your teeth look perfect after your braces are removed.

]]>When an adult tooth is removed there is a chance that dry socket will occur. This happens when the blood clot that forms falls out or is dislodged, leaving the bone and the nerves beneath open to the air. Food may also become lodged in that area increasing pain and infection.
The pain from a dry socket can travel along the face, through the jaw and along the nerves that are around the extracted tooth. It can be extremely painful and to manage it will require medication and treatment from your dentist or oral surgeon.
Your dental professional can provide antibacterial mouthwash before and after surgery, antibiotics, antiseptic cleaners, and possibly a medicated dressing at the time of the extraction.
There are several factors that may increase your risk for dry socket. To reduce your risk, all tobacco use should be halted, and all care instructions must be followed carefully.
People who are on oral contraceptives that increase the estrogen in the body, those who have had dry socket previously, and anyone who has a current infection in or around the tooth being removed are all at an increased risk of developing dry socket.
After any extraction, an after-care instruction sheet is provided and should be followed carefully. This often includes rest for the day and no exercise or sports for a few days afterward. Ice packs and pain medication are often recommended for managing the pain and swelling.
Increased water intake without a straw is encouraged to avoid dislodging the clot. It will be necessary to consume soft foods, mostly liquids and things that do not require chewing such as applesauce, working up to mostly soft foods after a day or two and graduating to semi-soft foods for a few days.
Avoid brushing the area for the first full day or two. Smoking of any kind is not recommended for a minimum of two to three days after surgery to avoid contact with the healing wound and to protect the area.
Treatments include a dentist flushing the area to remove debris and decrease pain and chance of infection, a pain medication stronger than normal over-the-counter options, and possibly a dressing that is medicated to ease pain and deter infection.
You may be encouraged to use a salt water rinse multiple times daily for the next week or two after surgery.
Dry socket can occur after a tooth extraction has taken place. Where the tooth is removed a blood clot will form to protect the bone and the nerves in the area.
If this becomes dislodged in some way it will leave nerves and bone open to the air. It is a painful condition that requires treatment by a dentist or an oral surgeon and may require antibiotics or other treatment options.

]]>Got a sore in your mouth that’s bothering you? It’s likely a canker sore. This common mouth ulcer can present itself inside your lips or on your cheeks. They tend to be white or yellow with redness surrounding them in the soft tissues.
If it’s a canker sore, you’ll feel tingling or pain. You may also have swollen lymph nodes, a fever, or just not feel well. The good news is that you can’t give canker sores or get them from anyone else. They tend to take one to three weeks to heal without any treatment though in about a week to 10 days the pain should subside.
Generally, canker sores will go away without you needing to do anything. You will want to keep up good oral hygiene even more so than usual to prevent germs from causing an infection. Additionally, avoiding spicy foods will help prevent antagonizing your canker sore. Soothing foods like milk, yogurt, or ice cream can help you with the pain.
Gargling with salt water can also help relieve some of the pain. Even honey can be an effective treatment for canker sores. Topical OTC treatments can help you, though for severe canker sores, you may want to consult your doctor or dentist for a prescription to help it go away.
Canker sores have many causes. Often it is the result of viral infection, hormones, vitamin deficiencies, and stress. You can find out more from your doctor or dentist to see what you can do.
For most people, avoiding the foods that made you get a canker sore could help. Anything spicy, salty, acidic, or prone to causing allergic reactions should be avoided. If you find you’re getting canker sores when you’re stressed out, it helps to look into meditation and deep breathing techniques to help you get a handle on it.
Additionally, making sure you’re on top of your oral health is ideal for avoiding canker sores. You should brush at least twice per day with a soft toothbrush and floss once daily too. Make sure you avoid agitating your gums and any soft tissue in your mouth.
With vitamin and mineral deficiencies, you’ll need to speak to your doctor. They can test you to see what you’re lacking and recommend suitable foods and supplements to help your body get what it needs to thrive.
However, if your canker sores become large, you get many at once, you’re in horrible pain, have a high fever, rash, headache, or diarrhea, it’s cause for concern. If you can’t eat or drink, or your canker sore continues to throb with pain even after three weeks, make sure you have it looked at by a medical professional to get the relief you need.

]]>Besides daily brushing and flossing your teeth, have you ever wondered how healthy your diet is? Are you consuming processed foods with added sugars?
The main problem of the modern diet is drinking too many sugary beverages such as cola, soda, orange juice, energy drinks, etc. It may have serious consequences on your general health and organs like the liver, kidneys, and, of course, teeth.
Let's say that one can of cola contains approximately 33 grams of sugar. If you think about your daily allowance, which is about 20 grams for women and 35 grams for men, you've already exceeded your limit. This means that chocolate isn't your worst enemy after all.
When consuming these beverages, sugar from your drink interacts with germs in your mouth and forms acid. This acid attacks your teeth’s layer called dentin that lies beneath enamel. It may cause numerous dental problems and the most common ones are erosion and cavities.
The main causes of erosion are foods and beverages. Formed acids destroy calcium in the tooth and practically ruin your tooth enamel. Enamel is the first defense of every chemical that can potentially harm your teeth.
Saliva also has a significant function in neutralizing acids in your mouth. Consuming acidic foods and beverages with a pH level of 5.5 or lower increases this process. You can recognize it by tooth sensitivity, discoloration, or cracks.
Cavities may occur by feeding germs in your mouth with too much sugar from soft drinks and foods like candies, bread, cereals. It's a common dental problem nowadays, especially among children. It can develop after destroying tooth enamel with acids, and it's followed by bad breath, toothache, or tooth sensitivity.
No matter how much you want to hear the opposite, dietary drinks are not a better solution. At some point, they can be more harmful than regular soft drinks. They might seem ideal because of the artificial sweeteners, but dietary sodas are often highly acidic.
Also, caffeine from these beverages and energy drinks usually affects saliva production which leads to dehydration. Without enough saliva to wash away food debris and sugar, developing tooth decay is more than possible.
Parents usually use the method of putting their kids into bed with a bottle of milk. This method shouldn't be used on kids or babies. Even if babies don't have teeth yet, sugar from milk might produce tooth decay.
It's usually called baby bottle tooth decay, and you can stop it by giving your child more water during the day between meals and gently brushing gums and teeth with wet gauze or silicone toothbrushes and suitable toothpaste.
Even if fluoride is good for the teeth, don't use it before your child's third year. Limit daily intake of juices to four ounces and avoid giving highly acidic juices to young children.
People from Smile Solutions always recommend dietary changes. Even if it seems impossible, quitting any sugary beverage would make enormous progress. But, if you can't give up on it completely, using a straw should lower the risk of developing further dental problems. Always rinse it up with water and make sure to drink it after every meal.
One of the most common mistakes is immediate brushing. It can do the opposite and damage your enamel, so always wait for 30 to 60 minutes. Finally, regular checkups and excellent oral hygiene play a vital role in prevention.

]]>Feeling less than confident about your smile can affect your performance across all life areas. People who don't enjoy showing their teeth often shy away from important social and professional opportunities.
Issues such as cracked, chipped, and discolored teeth can make the simple intimacy of a kiss downright embarrassing. More importantly, oral issues that are left unresolved can greatly impact your marketability. Fortunately, there are five effective ways to improve your smile.
The easiest way to improve your smile is by practicing good oral hygiene. You should be brushing and flossing twice daily and scheduling regular visits with your dentist. Although many people put dental visits on hold due to fear of treatment, embarrassment, and worry about the overall cost, there are many solutions for mitigating these things.
Look for a professional with multiple options in anesthesia, a good "chair-side" manner, and a range of accepted insurances and payment options. Taking care of minor issues early on will prevent them from spiraling out of control.
Completing your smile after tooth loss or following severe structural damage is an important step for those with one or more missing teeth. Dental implants and dental bridges have both functional and aesthetic benefits.
These treatments will balance your bite forces to limit wear on your remaining natural teeth. When tooth loss is widespread, it can also significantly improve your chewing and talking abilities. You'll feel more confident with a complete smile, and your marketability will increase.
Dental bridges tend to be much cheaper than dental implants. With a bridge, one or more prosthetic teeth are affixed in the mouth using the surrounding, healthy teeth as anchors.
However, given that dental implants are stabilized with titanium posts that are inserted directly into the underlying bone, these treatments can stave off problems with jawbone deterioration. Once titanium posts for dental implants have been successfully grafted in, the body will treat them much like natural tooth roots.
Blood and oxygen delivery will remain robust across the treatment area to keep the underlying bone intact and healthy. You want to consider dental implants if facial volume loss and facial sagging due to missing teeth are an increasing concern.
Even with a full set of healthy teeth, you may feel self-conscious when showing off your smile. Large gaps and severely crooked teeth are both common issues. Much like tooth loss, certain issues with tooth alignment can accelerate tooth wear. They can also make it difficult to clean all your teeth properly.
You can choose from metal and ceramic braces for orthodontic treatment. You also have the option of using clear teeth aligners to improve your smile if you are not interested in braces.
Unlike braces, plastic teeth aligners can take just months to produce better alignment. They're also removable, inconspicuous, and far easier to use. There isn't a lengthy list of foods that you can't eat when wearing aligners, and you can easily access all your teeth for flossing and brushing.
Get rid of deep stains with professional teeth whitening treatments. These are perfect for anyone who smokes cigarettes, regularly indulges in red wine or coffee, or has other life habits that lead to tooth discoloration.
Although there are countless products that you can purchase over the counter (OTC) to brighten your teeth, these solutions are only capable of lightening discolored teeth with just one to two shades. Moreover, applying them in visible areas in-between the teeth or around curved tooth surfaces can be a challenge.
When OTC teeth whitening products contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide as active ingredients, they can also cause severe damage to the gums and other soft tissues.
Porcelain veneers are a popular choice for smile improvement among people who don't like their tooth shape or tooth sizes. If you have one or more abnormally shaped teeth or teeth that are shorter or thinner than others, porcelain overlays can give you a far more balanced and natural look.
Porcelain veneers can provide dramatic smile makeovers in just one visit. They're also great for resolving problems with chipped, cracked, or inherently weak teeth, and with discolored teeth that are unresponsive to professional whitening procedures.
Your smile is easily one of the most noticeable features on your face. With the right dental or orthodontic treatments, you won't have to shy away from the camera or from social and professional opportunities. Having straight, white, and perfectly spaced teeth will boost both your confidence and your life quality.

]]>Many people suffer from grinding their teeth at night. More importantly, most of them aren't even aware of what's happening when they fall asleep, making this problem much more challenging to detect. However, unless someone hears you as you're grinding your teeth at night, you might need to find other ways to identify the issue.
So, here are some signs you need a mouthguard for teeth grinding that will help you seek treatment as soon as possible.
As you're grinding your teeth at night, your jaw is under constant pressure. This leads to recurring headaches in the morning, which indicates you might need to use a mouthguard. Of course, if you wake up with a headache every few weeks or months, it might be a sign of other issues.
However, if your head hurts every time you wake up, it's advisable to visit a dentist who can help you fix this issue and get rid of your morning headaches.
As stated earlier, headaches can be a symptom of many conditions or illnesses. Chipped or crooked teeth, on the other hand, are a clear sign that something is wrong with your teeth. So, be sure to schedule regular dentist appointments and check the condition of your teeth.
In addition, teeth are stronger than bones, and if you notice the signs of wear and tear, that means you're applying extra pressure to them at night. But, once you get a mouthguard, you'll manage to prolong the life of your teeth and keep them healthy for years.
Persistent jaw or tooth pain is another sign that you tend to grind your teeth at night. When exposed to continuous pressure, jaw muscles can become sore and sensitive, making it challenging to talk or chew in the morning. You may also notice pain if you try to move your jaw from side to side or when you open your mouth wide.
If you experience stiffness and face soreness, especially around your cheeks, keep in mind that this is another symptom of teeth grinding. When your facial muscles are put under stress, you will feel discomfort throughout the day, and if the unpleasant feeling of tired jaw and stiffness lasts for a few days, you will need to change your sleep routine and protect your teeth and facial muscles.
If you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night due to jaw soreness or persistent pain, you should consult a professional. That is especially true if these symptoms appear out of nowhere and you can't figure out why your jaw hurts every time you go to sleep.
What's more, interrupted sleep can affect your mood, focus and productivity, which is why it's essential to get enough rest every day. If you don't take care of this issue and get a quality mouthguard for teeth grinding, you will never be able to rest properly and alleviate jaw soreness and pain in the morning.
Dealing with interrupted sleep patterns or jaw soreness and pain can be daunting, but many people don't take these problems seriously. However, if you don't do your best to minimize the signs of wear and tear and protect your teeth from grinding, you will eventually experience at once all the symptoms mentioned above.
Imagine how challenging it would be to enjoy a day off or go to work if your whole face feels on fire. If that ever happens to you, you should get mouthguards as soon as possible and treat chipped teeth to prevent more damage.
Brushing and flossing isn't the only way to take good care of your teeth. If you avoid these issues, you will end up with a dental prosthetic, which is probably something you don't want to experience at a young age.
But, if you find the cause of your headaches or jaw pain on time, you can easily protect your teeth from chipping and improve the quality of your sleep. So, if you notice any of these signs, it would be best to talk to your dentist and find a quality mouthguard for teeth grinding before it's too late.

]]>Transition to old age begins with several physical changes. These changes include dull skin, visible pores, loss of height, hearing loss, brittle bones, and sometimes, loss of teeth. Tooth loss is common among seniors worldwide. According to statistics, nearly one in five adults aged 65 or older have no teeth left.
Of course, seeing a senior with a few or no teeth might seem like no big deal to you. However, you might reason differently if you understood the important roles our teeth play in our life and health in general.
If you are a senior with missing teeth, or, perhaps, you have an elderly loved one with this condition, here are four dental options for replacing missing teeth.
A dental implant involves the replacement of a missing tooth. The replacement tooth root is attached to the jawbone via a surgical procedure, enabling the patient to chew and perform other typical functions with the implant.
While this dental option is ideal for those in need of a tooth replacement, it may not be the right choice for seniors needing several teeth replacements. Also, since dental implants require surgery, you might end up spending a lot of money to get the job done. However, that shouldn't deter you from embracing a dental implant. Why? Because it comes with several benefits.
One of the benefits of a dental implant lies in the appearance and feel of the replacement tooth. The replacement tooth appears and feels like a natural tooth and is quite durable, unlike other options.
A resin-retained bridge replacement option remains one of the cheapest and most embraced options. Unlike a fixed bridge, a resin-retained bridge involves a less invasive procedure. While the former is ideal for teeth that help one grind food, the latter can be an ideal option for missing front teeth, which, of course, aren't really relied on for chewing.
A resin-retained bridge is affixed to adjacent teeth on both sides. Though deemed less invasive and durable than a fixed bridge, applying a resin-retained bridge can be tricky. Hence, ensure you contact a qualified Edmonton dentist for the procedure. And if you need advice or have concerns regarding the resin-retained bridge option, don’t hesitate to ask.
A fixed bridge is a teeth replacement procedure that closes the space between one or more absent teeth. Seniors who wish to embrace this option must get ready to pay multiple visits to the dentist as the process of fixing the implant, designing the bridge to the patient’s spec, and placing it in the appropriate spot takes time.
However, as soon as the bridge is fixed, differentiating it from natural teeth becomes hard due to the stark similarity. But that's not all. Aside from appearing like natural teeth, a fixed dental bridge also feels and functions like one's in-built teeth. It doesn’t need removal for cleaning, neither is it as expensive as a dental tooth implant.
If you’ve lost a few of your teeth on the lower or upper part of your jaw, a removable partial denture may be perfect for you. This tooth replacement option involves the attachment of replacement teeth for a small portion of missing teeth.
Of course, as the name implies, the replacement is detachable. Also, it functions and has the appearance of natural teeth.
While this option is perfect for seniors who want something that makes chewing easy, the downside about removable partial dentures is that they are less durable than the other alternatives mentioned above. Also, they can cause discomfort when worn for a long period.
When choosing the ideal dental option for your missing teeth, ensure you go for what suits you. Also, it is important you consider your pocket before embracing any option. If you are confused or need advice, don’t hesitate to contact your dentist.

]]>Good oral hygiene is essential in keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Therefore, it is vital to be mindful of your daily dental habits as they play a significant role in preventing dental problems. This piece uncovers some of the best practices to improve your dental hygiene.
It is recommended that you brush your teeth at least twice a day. It is essential in keeping your teeth free from plaque, a sticky pale yellow film that forms on your teeth and contains germs. Plaque that isn't removed hardens, forming a substance known as tartar and can cause dental problems such as tooth decay and gum disease.
When brushing, use a soft-bristled toothbrush; a toothbrush with tough bristles may damage your gums and enamel and result in long-term damage such as enamel loss or receding gums.
Brush your teeth by gently moving the toothbrush in small circular motions. Take your time to brush the top, front, and back of every tooth. Avoid sawing back and forth motion. Do not forget to brush over your tongue because it can host a variety of germs if left uncleaned. Also, the buildup of plaque on your tongue can cause an unpleasant odor.
It is vital to have your toothbrush replaced every three to four months or as soon as the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush may not do a thorough job in cleaning your teeth.
Flossing is equally important as brushing your teeth. It helps remove food particles lodged between your teeth where your toothbrush is unable to reach. Flossing is an excellent dental practice that prevents cavities from forming and keeps your gums healthy.
Get into the habit of flossing at least once a day. Flossing is quite easy; however, some people find it challenging. If so, you may opt to use an interdental cleaner like a dental pick, pre-threaded flosser, a water flosser, or a tiny brush that reaches between your teeth.
For people with dental work, inflamed or sensitive gums, a water flosser makes a suitable option.
After brushing and flossing, rinse off with an antibacterial mouthwash to kill any remaining germs in the mouth. Using an antibacterial mouthwash helps to reduce acidity in the mouth, access crevices that are hard to brush in and around the gums and re-mineralize the teeth.
It is important to note using mouthwash does not substitute brushing and flossing but complements these practices.
Consult with your dentist for specific mouthwash recommendations.
Many people associate going to the dentist with a terrible experience and only visit the dentist when something goes wrong. That should not be the case. It is recommended to visit the dentist at least twice a year. However, this may vary depending on one's overall dental health, age, and health history.
During your dental checkups, the dentist cleans your teeth and removes calculus. Aside from that, the dentist spots other potential issues such as visual signs of cavities, mouth cancer, gum disease, among other oral problems. Make it a habit to visit a dentist in Jonesboro AR for your dental cleanings and preventative care.
Regular dental visits are beneficial in building patient/dentist relationships. This bond creates a comfortable space to discuss some of your dental fears and worries.
To maintain good dental hygiene, you have to be mindful of the types of food you consume and how much you consume. Certain types of food, such as sugary foods, can negatively impact your teeth and gums.
When you consume sugary foods, the bacteria in your mouth feed on the sugar consumed and produce acids that attack and dissolve your tooth enamel. In time, you are likely to develop cavities that can cause severe dental problems when left untreated.
Therefore, you need to limit your consumption of sugary foods. You do not have to completely do away with sugar to have good dental hygiene. All you need to do is embrace basic dental practices like chewing after eating to maintain healthy teeth.
Practicing good dental habits, as mentioned above, is crucial in improving your dental hygiene. Good oral hygiene not only prevents dental problems but also benefits your overall health.

]]>All your glamour and clamor can be dented or elevated depending on your smile. And although you may not hear it from your acquaintances, if you have any issue within your dental formulae, they’ll be wondering, are your teeth crooked? Is that a stain? Surely, a dental clean-up to get perfect teeth isn’t that expensive.
And while whitening products are readily available to offer that sparkling smile, more people are wary of the chemical ingredients. If you’re one of them, I’m going to show you some of the effective tips that I have used to get the sought-after natural-looking white teeth.
Aimed at improving oral hygiene and eradicating toxins from the body, oil pulling is a practice that aids in removing germs from your mouth. All you must do is swish oil (either sesame, sunflower, or coconut) around your mouth.
Besides eradicating plagues and germs in the mouth, oil pulling also reduces gingivitis. The beneficial components in coconut oil make it more populous among users, given that it also has a pleasant taste. To undertake this practice, take one tablespoon of coconut oil, push and pull it through your teeth for 15 to 20 minutes.
Because of its ability to kill germs, hydrogen peroxide is one of the most renowned natural bleaching agents used over the years. It’s majorly used in commercial whitening products. Toothpaste containing hydrogen peroxide has shown 62 percent whiter teeth compared to those without.
A concentration of between 1.5 and three percent is recommended to avoid any side effects. Another product with natural whitening properties used in commercial toothpaste is baking soda. Its alkaline attribute inhibits germ growth in your mouth.
Toothpaste containing baking soda has shown to be more effective in plaque removal, which is a precursor for teeth stain. Make a baking soda paste by mixing two teaspoons of water with one teaspoon of baking soda.
For an effective outcome, you can also make a paste of hydrogen peroxide (two teaspoons) with baking soda (one teaspoon). Gently use that paste a couple of times a week to avoid any overuse which will cause enamel erosion.
Bromelain and malic acid found in pineapple and strawberries, respectively, are attributed to teeth whitening. Bromelain found in pineapple is more effective at removing stains than ordinary toothpaste.
Strawberry, on the other hand, is smashed and mixed with baking soda. Working in tandem, the malic acid removes discoloration while baking soda buffs stains away. Papain, an enzyme in papaya, also has whitening effects.
Plaque buildup caused by germs is the primary cause of teeth discoloration. Curating an ideal routine to brush your teeth and floss will go a long way in not only whitening but cleaning your teeth.
Brushing cleans the surface while flossing cleans in between the teeth to remove germs that cause plaque.
Your teeth will naturally turn yellow as you age, but there are contributing drinks that will accelerate this process. They include dark berries, coffee, soda, and red wine. If you crave one of these beverages, consider using a straw to prevent direct contact with your teeth.
To equally prevent discoloration, consider brushing your teeth 30 minutes after consumption of these beverages. Chewing and tobacco smoking also cause discoloration. You should also endeavor to avoid meals with high sugar intake and incline more to calcium-rich foods.
For desirable results, you’ll need to be consistent with the practices above, so when you meet your acquaintances, you can flaunt your perfect, naturally white teeth. It’s also prudent to consult your dentist, as they’ll be able to preempt any issues that may occur and prescribe adequate measures to mitigate any oral health concerns you may have.

Wisdom tooth removal surgery has become standard practice these days. However, not all wisdom teeth need to be removed. Usually, dentists remove wisdom teeth as a preventive measure - when a wisdom tooth has not erupted completely or has erupted at an angle and can harm the other teeth.
This article explains the clinical situations where wisdom tooth extraction becomes a necessity.
Removing wisdom teeth may not be required in the following cases:
Even if your wisdom teeth do not hurt, your dentist may still recommend having them removed. This is because wisdom teeth may sometimes be partially or entirely impacted within their sockets - meaning they have not erupted completely. This usually occurs when there is inadequate space in the jaws for the wisdom teeth to erupt.
As a result, these teeth may erupt at an angle to the other teeth, resulting in overcrowding. If a wisdom tooth pushes up excessively against the adjacent teeth, it can result in various complications - such as tooth decay and gum disease. That is why dentists recommend impacted wisdom teeth removal as a preventive measure.
The American Dental Association recommends wisdom teeth removal as a preventive measure in the following situations:
Besides preventive measures, orthodontists often remove wisdom teeth to treat overcrowding. Once the wisdom teeth are removed, they will utilize the available space to realign the remaining teeth in the oral cavity using braces or clear aligners.
According to the Canadian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the most appropriate time for wisdom teeth removal is an early age. This is because, at an early age, our bones are flexible and have excellent regeneration potential. Therefore, it is easy to extract wisdom teeth with rapid healing and minimal complications.
On the other hand, the risk of complications increases with age. Therefore, it is always a good idea to get the wisdom teeth removed as soon as possible - if needed.
The decision on whether to extract your wisdom teeth or not will be made by your dentist, after a detailed clinical examination. If your dentist decides not to remove your wisdom teeth, you should continue to monitor them and ensure optimal oral hygiene through brushing and flossing - to prevent any issues.
Regular dental visits also go a long way in ensuring that your wisdom teeth remain healthy and problem-free.

]]>If you notice you have bad breath, chances are someone else has noticed too. Known as halitosis, it happens to everyone sooner or later. That’s in large part thanks to the germs in your mouth.
Right after you eat, food gets trapped between your teeth and along the gums, the sweet spot for germs to do their thing. If you don’t brush your teeth right away, the germs will fester, and well, so too will your bad breath.
But it’s not just a matter of not brushing up on your oral hygiene. Certain foods that have a strong odor can turn even the healthiest of mouths into the stinkiest.
Garlic, onions, coffee, and alcohol are the biggest offenders mainly because they enter your blood stream after being absorbed by your body. Smoking works in the same way. So you more or less emit them from your lungs.
Dry mouth can lead to bad breath as can more serious illnesses like diabetes, acid reflux, or liver or kidney diseases. Dental diseases may also be the culprit if you have gingivitis or periodontal disease.
For all instances of bad breath that won’t go away even after brushing and flossing, it’s a good idea to find out what’s causing it so you can correct the root issue and get your mouth and the rest of your body in proper health.
For most people, the solution to bad breath can be found below in these five steps.
Every day, you should brush your teeth a minimum of twice and floss at least once. This should be plenty to dislodge the food and germs that get caught in your teeth and along the gums.
A crucial step for fresher breath is making sure you clean your tongue. It traps germs, food debris, and dead cells in the many crevices it has which can make an otherwise clean mouth dirty. You can use your toothbrush though a tongue scraper may be more effective for completely ridding your tongue of odor-causing elements.
In addition to stinky foods, dry mouth is one of the most common causes of bad breath. If your mouth doesn’t have enough saliva, that leads to bad breath. It’s why you wake up with morning breath every day, though that can happen any time of day without enough water. Keep water with you all day long and remember to sip from it often.
Yes, there are foods that will make your breath stink. But high protein and low-carb diets can also cause bad breath. When you don’t eat enough carbs in particular, it will have your body burning fat rather than sugar, leading to some super-smelly breath.
Hey, you knew this would be on here! Your dentist is in your corner to help you fight bad breath. If you have been doing all the right things for your oral hygiene but your breath still stinks, your dentist can get to the bottom of things to help you have a healthy mouth.
All told, bad breath happens to everyone at some point. But if it’s a regular occurrence that won’t quit no matter how well you take care of your teeth, it’s time to dig deeper to eliminate the root cause and clear the air!
