Understanding Tooth Disease And What To Do

Tooth disease stems from an infection of the gums and the tissue that surrounds the teeth and holds them in place. When tooth and gum disease - often called periodontal disease - occurs it can lead to bleeding gums, pain chewing and eating, and even lead to loose teeth or tooth loss.

It will require gum disease treatment and possibly further treatment to any teeth that have been affected.

Gum disease diagnosis

To diagnoses gum disease it is necessary to see a dentist and explain all the symptoms that are present, and allow them to examine the teeth and gums. Symptoms may include swelling in the gums, receding gums, tooth pain, jaw pain, and even loose teeth that are prone to falling out.

Along with these there may be bad breath that cannot be easily solved, and at times may even lead to puss. There may be bleeding of the gums, first during brushing and later more often, as well as pain during eating and chewing, and sensitivity to heat or cold.

The signs must be addressed by a dentist to avoid further damage or tooth loss. Things such as a salt water rinse at home may help to reduce irritation and lower the infection. Some antiseptic or antibiotic essential oils can be used in a mouthwash or rinse, and soft foods can help to reduce the discomfort while eating.

Oral hygiene to fight tooth disease

Tooth disease is often caused by build-up of plaque along the gums and teeth, which become hard and can lead to infections of the teeth and gums. To avoid this it is important to maintain proper flossing, brushing, and oral hygiene.

It is necessary to remove the build-up each day so that it doesn’t become a hardened plaque that is harder to remove and can lead to many concerns, including tooth and gum disease.

Dental treatments to fight gum disease

Treatments may include a deep clean by the dental hygienist that will remove build-up not only from the visible surface of the teeth but also along the gums and even the build-up that is on the teeth underneath the gums. All bacteria particles and build-up are removed, plaque and tartar are scraped off, and an antiseptic product may be sprayed along the gums where they are deep cleaned.

Any cavities will be filled to lessen the places for bacteria to build and reduce the spread of gum disease. Receding gums may be treated at the appointment or may require a surgical intervention to rebuild the gums.

Antibiotics may be required to clear up any infection that is in the gums and around the teeth, allowing the gums to begin to repair themselves and return to their original healthy condition.

Gum disease can lead to permanent tooth loss if not addressed, so all symptoms should be treated as necessary. Signs include bleeding and sore gums, receding gums, sensitivity and pain when eating and chewing, and may lead to fever or other whole body responses.

Treatment may include deep cleaning, antibiotics, or even dental surgery and gum repair. Maintaining good dental hygiene with brushing, flossing, regular dental visits, and good food and nutritional choices will all help to avoid tooth disease.
