Tooth Replacement Options You Need To Know

Functional teeth are necessary for proper chewing and speaking, while their appearance is a critical factor in maximizing your confidence. As we age, we are far more likely to lose teeth and have an increased need for tooth replacements. If you have cracked, damaged, or missing teeth, there are multiple options for replacing your teeth.

Dental Implant

A dental implant is one of the most effective ways to replace a single missing tooth or an entire row of teeth. Dental implant surgery is a procedure in which a prosthetic tooth is placed onto a screw-like metal post which has been surgically placed in a patient’s jawbone. Dental implant surgery can involve one or more procedures depending on the condition of your jaw.

Dental implants have many benefits:

  • Durable and permanent
  • Success rate of 95 percent
  • Prevents jawbone loss
  • Prevents shifting of neighbouring teeth
  • The most aesthetically pleasing replacement

If your dentist determines you are a good candidate for them, dental implants in Bristol may offer the best long-term option for you.

Denture

Dentures are another excellent option for replacing missing teeth. There are several choices of complete or partial dentures that your dentist may recommend depending on your needs. Here are some examples of the types of dentures available:

  • All-On-4 Implant-Supported Denture

With this procedure, dentists secure a full lower or upper arch denture using four carefully placed implants. This is more affordable than having each tooth replaced with an individual implant and offers a complete arch of teeth. Those who have this procedure can enjoy a greater variety of foods than those with traditional dentures. All-on-4 dentures do not have a palate, so they feel less cumbersome than regular dentures.

  • Removable Partial Denture

Partial dentures are a tooth replacement option on which your replacement tooth is attached to a plastic base that blends in with your gums. Unlike fixed bridges and implants, they are removable and should be taken out for cleaning and sleep. Removable partial dentures are affordable, quick, easily fixable, and a non-invasive treatment option compared to fixed bridges and implants.

  • Removable Complete Denture

Removable complete dentures are a cost-effective alternative to dental implant treatment. These attach to the top of the gums and blend into the base where denture teeth are attached. Because all teeth are replaced, these dentures can significantly improve appearance and self-confidence.

These dentures support the muscles in the cheeks and lips to restore facial dimensions. Complete dentures can help improve speech and allow the wearer to eat comfortably. These dentures are relatively fast and inexpensive. Removable dentures can also be relined or adjusted to accommodate the changing shape of the jawbone

  • Flipper - Temporary Option

This is a temporary partial denture that can fill in unsightly gaps so that you can smile and speak without feeling self-conscious. This is not a permanent solution, but it is relatively inexpensive and can be made before extraction for use immediately after a procedure.

Bridges

Dental bridges are used to bridge a gap in your teeth. They are made up of two or more crowns and are anchored by abutment teeth on either side of the gap. The type of bridge you choose will differ depending on what will anchor the bridge.

  • Implant-Supported Fixed Bridge

This procedure uses two or more implants as the abutment teeth which anchor the dental bridge. It looks very similar to a tooth-supported fixed bridge. These bridges can either be cemented or screwed in place. The screw-holes are virtually invisible after being covered with a tooth-colored composite resin.

These bridges look and feel very natural, making it easy to eat regular foods and speak without difficulty. This is a suitable treatment for those who have missing teeth that are located adjacent to one another. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, many studies demonstrated no disadvantageous effects to this procedure.

  • Tooth-Supported Fixed Bridges

These bridges are the most common alternative to implant-supported fixed bridges, especially where there is only one tooth missing. These bridges use natural teeth as the abutments. These natural teeth are shaped, and a crown is placed over them and cemented in place.

This treatment is more cost-efficient than getting each tooth replaced and is generally low risk as it can easily be replaced if broken. This procedure is perfect for those who are looking for a quick solution to a missing tooth and do not want to undergo a more invasive surgical procedure.
