Taking care of your teeth and gums is crucial for your smile and overall quality of life. You only get one set of adult teeth, so you better take care of them. If you don't take responsibility, you're at risk for cavities, tooth decay or even tooth loss. Dealing with any of these issues is painful and usually involves dental procedures. Here are some tips on how you can keep your oral health in check.

Brush Your Teeth

It may seem obvious that you need to brush your teeth daily, but many people don't do it. This is the most important part of oral hygiene. Brush twice daily, usually in the morning and before bed, with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Using harder bristles can damage your gums and tooth enamel.

Brushing won't help if you're not doing it correctly. Use your toothbrush to slowly make circular motions, which removes plaque buildup. This process should take two to three minutes. If you aren't brushing as often or as well as you should be, the plaque is liable to harden, which can turn into gingivitis

Remember to brush your tongue as well. Whether you believe it or not, it's covered in bacteria. Removing these bacteria is important for protecting your teeth. It also keeps your breath fresh and taste buds able to taste to their fullest potential.

Use Mouthwash

Using mouthwash is helpful in preventing gum disease. Each time you rinse your mouth, you're killing bacteria that can damage your gums and teeth. Use it daily to greatly reduce your chances of gum disease

Floss Daily

Brushing and using mouthwash aren't enough when it comes to oral health. Have you ever thought about how much food gets stuck in between your teeth when you're eating? If you don't floss at least once per day, that food is never completely cleaned out, and it can eventually destroy your smile. 

By choosing not to floss, you're allowing food to build up, which allows bacteria to fester between your teeth. This results in cavities, decay and gum disease. If you get gum disease, expect to have swollen, painful and receding gums or even bone loss. 

An unexpected result from flossing is that you can reduce your chance of developing heart disease. While your teeth and heart appear to be unrelated, they actually have been linked together. The bacteria from gum disease are able to get into the bloodstream and enter the heart, which puts the heart valves at risk. Flossing can save your teeth as well as your life.

If you find it difficult to floss because your teeth are close together or you have arthritis, don't give up. Ribbon-style floss and floss picks work the best because they are able to easily glide through tight spaces. Either makes flossing a breeze, and if it’s easy, you’re likely to make it into a new, healthy habit!

It’s not difficult to take care of your teeth and gums. The only things you need to do are brush, floss, use mouthwash and go to the dentist regularly. Even if you don’t like going to the dentist, as long as you’re engaging in these dental precautions, you won’t have anything to worry about. Maintain your beautiful smile and avoid cavities and gum disease by taking your dental health seriously.

  • I find that I have derived tremendous gum and teeth health benefits from periodically (once or twice/week) rinsing out my mouth with warm salt water. Additionally, I have noticed that by massaging my gums every morning after I brush (use index finger and/or soft cloth and gently make a circular motion directly on the gum) helps with strengthening my gums and blood flow.
