Bad breath can be an extremely uncomfortable problem. Some forms of bad breath are chronic. Rather than isolated instances of odor due to eating something specific or skipping a day’s worth of brushing, it is fairly common for people to experience odorous breath on an ongoing basis. Chronic as opposed to episodic bad breath is often referred to as halitosis.
Here are some natural methods to combat recurring or continual problems with your breath.
Clean Your Mouth More Frequently
When you’re considering how to treat halitosis naturally and improve your breath, the first thing that you need to do is assess your current oral care regimen. At a minimum, you should brush twice a day and floss once a day. Some people benefit from brushing between three and four times a day, and you may fall within that group.
Pick the Right Toothbrush
To enhance the efficacy of your brushing, be sure that you’re using the right type of toothbrush. You should select a brush with soft bristles.
It may seem reasonable to assume that a brush with firm bristles would offer better cleaning power.
In actuality, firm bristles may be irritating your gums and creating areas where bacteria can accumulate. Soft bristles enable you to brush below the gumline thoroughly and avoid leaving odorous tartar where it is more likely to become trapped.
Try an Oral Irrigator
Your oral care may benefit from using an oral irrigator. This device is not necessarily a replacement for brushing because it cannot clean between tight spaces in the same way that floss can. However, it can cover the entire surface area of your teeth that brushing may not cover. It is especially good for getting food residue and bacteria trapped in between your teeth and your gums.
Use a Tongue Scraper
It is very common for people to ignore their tongue when they are brushing their teeth. Nevertheless, adequately cleaning your tongue is essential to your oral hygiene. In reality, the most odiferous elements contributing to bad breath are generally attributable to bacteria on the tongue rather than other parts of the mouth.
In addition to brushing your tongue you should try using a tongue scraper. This tool is especially good at removing buildup from the back of your tongue.
Limit Your Caffeine Intake
A high volume of caffeine is a common cause of dry mouth. Making an attempt to reduce your caffeine consumption could make a noticeable change for the better.
Talk to Your Doctor
Usually, a breath problem becomes especially worrisome to people when they realize that traditional remedies simply aren’t working or just don’t work for very long. If you’ve repeatedly observed that your basic efforts to freshen your breath by improving oral hygiene aren’t working well, you may have an underlying condition that’s impeding your ability to produce a lasting result.
One of the best ways to tackle frustrations with chronic issues is to talk to your doctor. Some dietary deficiencies could be negatively impacting the quality of your breath. Also, enzymatic problems could hinder your natural elimination of bacteria or result in an excessive accumulation of toxins. In fact, sudden onset of bad breath may be a red flag to your doctor about liver function.
Taking action to meaningfully address issues with your breath can have a surprisingly appreciable impact on how you feel. Many types of bad breath can feel like continually having an unpleasant taste in your mouth. It may feel like there’s something yucky dominating your taste and possibly even your smell almost all of the time. Moreover, it can cause feelings of insecurity.
Taking action can make confident that you aren’t bombarding someone with foul smells every time that you open your breath. Not having to worry about your breath dominating a conversation will be a big relief. Ultimately, your comfort, the impression that you make on people, and your overall oral health can benefit from some targeted efforts to take control of your breath.
