Medically known as oral candidiasis, oral thrush occurs when this fungus builds up on the lining of your mouth. Believe it or not, it’s a normal organism that should be present, but when it overgrows, it leads to this condition.

It can happen to anyone, though babies and older adults are at greater risk because their immunity is not as strong. Those with suppressed immune systems, certain health conditions, or those taking particular medications might be more prone to oral thrush. For healthy individuals, this type of candida fungus presents no problems. It is present in three-quarters of the world’s population.

Symptoms Of Oral Thrush

If you have oral thrush, you’ll notice these signs:

  • Creamy white lesions all over your mouth from tongue to cheeks and even back on your tonsils
  • Cottage cheese-like raised legions
  • Redness or burning that makes eating or swallowing a challenge
  • Tendency for slight bleeding when lesions are rubbed
  • Redness and cracking at the corner of the mouth
  • Feeling like you have a mouth full of cotton
  • Inability to taste
  • And for denture wearers, irritation and pain under the dentures

You’re at a much greater risk for having oral thrush if you’re taking antibiotics, wear dentures, use mouthwash excessively, take steroid medications, have a weakened immune system, have diabetes or chronic dry mouth, eat a poor diet, or are a heavy smoker.

What Can I Do If I Have Oral Thrush?

If you’ve nodded your head as you’ve read through the list of symptoms above, it’s time to get to the doctor. You’ll likely be prescribed anti-thrush drugs like miconazole or nystatin generally in the form of lozenges, drops, or a gel. If you’re on other medications, your doctor can prescribe something that won’t interfere with them while treating your oral thrush.

At home, you can do a few things to relieve the discomfort and prevent it from getting worse while simultaneously taking your prescribed anti-thrush medications. For one, rinse your mouth with warm saltwater several times a day. Saltwater naturally relieves swelling and speeds up healing. You shouldn’t use mouthwashes or sprays while you have oral thrush.

Additionally, buy a bunch of new toothbrushes. You can get them at the dollar store to save money. Just make sure the bristles are soft so you don’t scrape the lesions. Each day, use a new toothbrush until your oral thrush has cleared away to avoid prolonging its stay.

And finally, a tasty remedy to see you through until your oral thrush is all gone is to eat unsweetened yogurt each day. This helps restore the healthy bacteria in your mouth to the proper levels.

Oral thrush can last up to 2 weeks so if you notice these symptoms, visit your doctor immediately to start those anti-thrush prescription treatments and take back control over your oral health.
