When you visit your dentist, they will likely discuss with you plaque and tartar buildup. Plaque is what forms on the exterior of your teeth and along the gum line. It’s soft and sticky.

Tartar is what plaque turns into when you don’t practice proper oral hygiene. It’s hard and yellowish-brown.

Every time you eat, the bacteria in your mouth breaks downs the carbs from that food and turns it into acid. That acid mixes with any leftover remnants of food plus saliva and creates plaque.

If you brush and floss often, it will prevent problems with both plaque and tartar. Visiting your dentist twice yearly will ensure any buildup that you gained can be removed to keep your mouth healthy.

No one enjoys that scraping tool at the dentist, so if you want to impress your dentist ahead of your next check-up, here are some natural ways you can remove plaque and prevent tartar.

Be meticulous about your oral hygiene to remove plaque and tartar

You’re binge-watching your favorite show until the wee hours of the morning and you want to just crawl into bed and sleep. Don’t do it without brushing your teeth!

Good oral hygiene is critical for keeping plaque and tartar away. You should brush twice a day using a natural toothpaste.

You must floss daily too. Dentists agree once per day with the floss should do it, though you should do it before you brush.

Consider investing in an electric toothbrush to remove plaque and tartar

You can certainly get an A-plus review from your dentist using manual toothbrushes. Studies have found though that electric toothbrushes, particularly those with heads that oscillate, can remove plaque more effectively.

Don’t skip mouthwash to remove plaque and tartar

Mouthwash helps seal the deal for a clean mouth. You shouldn’t choose anything with alcohol in it or a simple breath freshener. Look for a brand that will help give you more protection from plaque and tartar.

Use baking soda to remove plaque and tartar

You can look in your pantry for baking soda or you can buy toothpaste that includes it as an ingredient. It is safe, natural, and very effective at removing plaque without causing damage to the enamel. Studies show that baking soda works to banish plaque and guards against demineralization.

Try oil pulling to remove plaque and tartar

Researchers found that oil pulling using coconut oil decreased dental plaque by 50 percent. Coconut oil also happens to be highly anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial. It also nourishes with antioxidants.

All it takes is swishing a warm tablespoon of coconut oil around in your mouth for five to 10 minutes. Be sure to spit it out in your trash – swallowing it isn’t advised after the swishing and it can clog your sink.

The best way to get rid of plaque and tartar is to do all you can to prevent it. That means making time to visit your dentist for those appointments every six months.

Taking good care of your oral hygiene by working hard to fight plaque and tartar will save you from worse problems down the road, and it’s certainly much easier too!
