Red wine is wonderful for your heart health thanks to its high content of resveratrol. But it can leave you with a stained smile that makes you want to hide your teeth. You don’t have to hide behind your cloth mask forever though. You can take care of your red wine teeth stains and have a smile you’re proud to show off.
The pigments in red wine, called chromogens, get into those porous surfaces on your teeth. Even with just a few sips, your pearly whites turn magenta. It’s the acid and tannins in red wine that lead to staining though, causing enamel to erode. You don’t have to switch your red wine for something else though if you do a few things to mitigate the staining.
Brush and floss first
Red wine stains cling to film on your teeth so before uncorking your favorite red, go brush and floss your teeth. This will minimize any staining and cut down on the risk for gum disease and tooth decay too.
Sip water too
Whenever you consume any type of alcoholic beverage, it’s wise to drink water between each serving. This helps you stay hydrated and avoids a nasty hangover the next day, plus with red wine, it helps get the red out. Don’t go brushing right away after a glass of wine and a big meal. Wait it out 30 minutes as your enamel is most sensitive at this point and you will avoid damaging it.
Nibble on something
Wine goes beautifully with cheese, not just for the flavors, but also because it can cut through the acid of red wine. Consider a nice tray of crunchy veggies with hard cheeses which will all naturally remove any staining from your red wine.
Brush with whitening toothpaste
Whitening toothpastes get rid of surface stains that build up over time. They also prevent new stains from forming. If you want to keep your smile looking brighter, give it a try.
See your dentist regularly
Part of keeping up that beautiful smile is by visiting your dentist. If you’re especially concerned about red wine stains, or stains from coffee too, talk to your dentist about whitening options. Depending on your situation, you may be able to use an at-home whitening product or your dentist can professionally whiten your teeth. After that though, you should always follow these tips to keep your smile whiter and brighter.
By simply engaging in these habits, you’ll cut down on the stains left behind by red wine. And by doing that, you’ll have plenty more to smile about!
