5 Tips To Keep Your Natural Teeth

As we age, tooth loss is easier to come by. But with a little care from you and your dentist, you can keep your natural teeth intact. Sometimes, losing a permanent tooth is unavoidable due to an injury or accident, but other times, tooth loss occurs from lack of proper dental hygiene.

You have complete control of your oral health - and natural teeth - so look out for them. According to the CDC, about one in every five American adults ages 65 and older have lost all their teeth. Avoid being a statistic with these five tips to keep your natural teeth.

1. Never skip brushing to keep natural teeth

At minimum, you should be brushing your teeth twice a day. But if you’ve had gum troubles, you may want to start brushing mid-day too. Every session of brushing should last no less than two minutes.

If you want to make it even easier, invest in an electric toothbrush. They are timed to run for two minutes and they can more easily remove debris for healthier teeth.

2. Don’t snack so much, especially with sugary things to keep natural teeth

The acids in your mouth linger about 40 minutes after eating. The more you’re eating throughout the day, the more acids.

Then there’s sugar which leads to tooth decay. The germs in your mouth breaks these sugars down into acids. If you simply must snack, choose something like cheese that makes you salivate.

3. Learn to floss to keep natural teeth

Flossing may seem like a chore but if you do it, your dentist will surely notice the improvements. You will too in that you’ll have a cleaner, fresher, healthier mouth.

Your brush can’t do it all, even the high-end electric ones. Aim to floss once daily and if you’re having trouble with your technique, ask your dentist to teach you during your next check-up.

4. Use a good toothpaste and mouthwash to keep natural teeth

Toothpaste shouldn’t be abrasive so you don’t strip your enamel. Brush your tongue too to remove germs, and then rinse with an alcohol-free mouthwash.

5. Be careful when you chew to keep natural teeth

With aging, your teeth naturally become more fragile. Take care when eating that you don’t chomp down on bones or hard foods to avoid chipping them. You can also use chewing to your advantage with sugarless gum to help you produce enough saliva to keep germs from breeding.

When you take care of your teeth at home and with the help of your dentist through regular visits, it will be less likely that you’ll lose them as you age. Start now and save yourself the troubles of serious dental woes later on!
