5 Common Dental Issues That Can Require Major Procedures

Written By Emma Sturgis / Reviewed By Ray Spotts

Dental health is an essential component of general well-being. Serious dental problems can be extremely painful and cause additional health issues in the future. That’s why it’s so important to have any issues with your teeth taken care of, even if a major procedure is necessary.

These five dental problems are quite common and require serious treatment.

Cavities Can Require Major Procedures

Caused by acid that eats away at your teeth, cavities are one of the most common dental problems. They can consist of tooth decay and tiny holes in the surface of your teeth. To deal with a cavity, you’ll need a dentist to drill and provide a filling. This is a relatively simple procedure, but it can be somewhat uncomfortable.

Oral Cancer Can Require Major Procedures

Cancer of the mouth is a relatively common phenomenon, especially among tobacco users. As you would expect, oral cancer is a very serious condition and can even lead to death. The cancer can occur in several locations within the mouth, including the gums, lips, tongue, and palate. The earlier your dentist recognizes the cancer, the better the likely outcome.

Gum Disease Can Require Major Procedures

If you’re not assiduous in your brushing and flossing habits, you’re likely to experience a significant build-up of plaque on your teeth. This will eventually cause your gums to become inflamed. Diseased gums are prone to bleeding and irritation, making the condition a serious nuisance.

Periodontitis Can Require Major Procedures

If gum disease is left unattended, it can eventually lead to periodontitis. This condition is characterized by an infection in your gums that can eventually spread to other parts of your mouth. Once your jaws and bones are affected, the infection can continue on to other parts of the body. It’s this potential for spread that makes periodontitis such a serious condition.

Broken Teeth Can Require Major Procedures

Teeth are tough and relatively durable, but they’re still capable of suffering damage. Anything from chewing hard foods to grinding your teeth while asleep can crack or even break a tooth. If this happens, you might need dental implants. Modern implants are surprisingly non-intrusive, and you should be able to eat and smile like you did before the incident.

If you want to improve your overall well-being, you could start taking your dental health seriously. The issues mentioned above can be extremely painful and often require intensive medical intervention. The best way to avoid these problems is by committing to preventative measures like brushing and flossing. A lack of care in this regard will eventually lead to a negative outcome.
