How To Relieve Physical Pains At The Workplace

Feeling physical pain is a huge problem in any context. It prevents you from being able to relax, think clearly and have a good time. In the workplace, it may make it impossible to focus, easy to agitate and prone to making mistakes. In other words, it can make you a bad employee, even though that’s not in your nature and even if it’s not your intention.

The thing is that you don’t necessarily have to feel physical pain at the workplace. There are several ways to relieve it. Here are some suggestions.

1.   Good posture

The first thing you should focus on is your posture. If you’re an office worker, chances are that long hours of sitting improperly may cause back pain. So, if you have control over your workstation, you might want to consider getting a standing desk. If not, read a bit about proper posture and try to adjust your chair, desk and monitor at the appropriate height.

If you’re working physically, try to lift with your legs instead of your back. Also, always use material handling equipment, regardless if something seems light. Accumulative weight is a thing you’re trying to minimize, as well.

2.   The rest of your lifestyle

There’s nothing easier than trying to attribute your physical pain at work with things you do at work. Drinking and partying all night, usually means that you’ll feel physical discomfort in the morning. So, if you decide to do this quite often, things will get messy at work, as well.

Moreover, sitting behind a desk is a lot easier if you regularly work out your back muscles or engage in light cardio on a regular basis. In other words, your general preparedness is something that will relieve physical pain at work.

3.   Look for professional help

A lot of physical discomfort sources actually come from some chronic issue that you’re experiencing. In that case, you should look for medical aid. For instance, a lot of these problems don’t actually come from your back but from your feet. Even while sitting, nerve endings in your feet may send signals to the rest of your body and cause discomfort all over.

In that particular case, finding a reliable podiatry clinic like Movement 101 might be the way to go. With the help of biomechanical assessments and 3D foot scanning, the experts in a specialized clinic may figure out the problem and start treating it in no time.

4.   Stay active

Sitting behind a desk for too long can put a strain on your physical health, however, you don’t have to remain dormant. Instead, you can try stretching your legs every now and then.

The simplest way to achieve this is to introduce the concept of interval working. What you should do is work for 25 minutes straight and then use the next five minutes to stretch. Other than this, you should also consider the idea of deskercise. This is a concept of stretching and engaging in micro-exercises in order to stay active.

5.   Use medication (when necessary)

There are some types of pain that can only be controlled with medication. Is excessive use of medication bad? Definitely. Does any kind of medication leave a mark? It does. However, is the fear of this worth enduring excruciating physical pain on a regular basis? Probably not.

The entire field of medical science is based on the concept of picking the lesser of two evils. Antibiotics can be harmful to your organism but they’re nowhere near as dangerous as what would happen if you didn’t use them. This type of triage is something that you could apply to your physical pain in the workplace, as well.

In conclusion

At the end of the day, the first thing you need to do is identify the source of the problem. Based on the diagnosis, you should start planning your future course of action. For starters, you need to consider your options. Physical exercise, different lifestyle choices, medical treatment and medication are just some of your options.

Keep in mind that trying out one of these options or a combination of options is always superior to enduring physical pain. It’s not just about your personal feelings and preferences. It’s about everything that you do and everyone you interact with.
