If you notice that you’re experiencing strange sensations throughout your body, a hormone imbalance might be to blame. Hormones can have abnormal fluctuations because of certain medical conditions or other changes in the body, and some of these causes may be a natural part of aging while others indicate a potentially serious medical condition that should receive prompt treatment. Any of these four signs could mean that your hormones are out of balance.

Increased Appetite

If you find yourself craving food much more often and have trouble satisfying your appetite no matter how much you eat, you may have a hormone imbalance. Premenstrual syndrome (or PMS) is often known to cause appetite increases in some women because of the fluctuation in hormone levels. If you find yourself craving sugar or wine more than usual, you might have unusually high cortisol or insulin levels. Electrolyte imbalances are often to blame for salty food cravings.

Unusual Sweating

Everyone sweats, but sweating more than usual could mean that something is off with your hormones. According to Healthline.com, excessive sweating (or hyperhidrosis) is sometimes the result of hyperthyroidism, which occurs when the thyroid gland makes too much of the T4 or T3 hormone. Menopause, which occurs in older women who stop menstruating, can also cause hormone balances that result in abnormal sweating. Adrenal gland disorders are another known cause.

Erectile Dysfunction

Men who have trouble maintaining erections often have low testosterone levels. Testosterone is a hormone that’s known to decrease with age, but other conditions and certain medications can lower a man’s testosterone. Low testosterone medication treatment is often effective for increasing men’s testosterone levels and resolving issues associated with erectile dysfunction. Metabolic syndrome, which can make insulin levels spike, is another hormonal cause of erectile dysfunction.

Sleep Disorders

Hormone imbalances can interrupt normal sleep patterns and make getting a good night of sleep much more difficult. Women who’ve recently given birth sometimes experience drops in estrogen and progesterone levels, which can interfere with sleep. Some medical experts believe that abnormal testosterone levels can contribute to the development of sleep apnea, which can also disrupt sleep. Thyroid hormone imbalances are known to cause excessive fatigue and can make people want to sleep more than usual.

Learning about the different symptoms of hormone imbalances can help you be more aware of what might be going on inside your body. If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s advisable to seek the appropriate medical attention and treatment so that your hormone levels can be normalized.
